Subject: 99 v6 dakota dies at idle

A few days ago I have been having problems with my 99 dakota v6, 5 speed 2 wheel drive. I drove it down the street and back to my house and it died in front of my house. Couldn't get it started so I left it there for a couple of days. Today I changed out the plugs to new auto lite 5224 plugs and a new cap and rotor. I got it started after standing on the gas pedal while cranking and it and idled fine for about 20 minutes when it died like it ran out of gas. Checked the plugs and they are dry and not wet.
I have been checking all the previous posts and figure it may be the IAC Idle Position Control sensor , the TPS throttle position sensor, or the o2 sensor. Since I have a NAPA auto parts store within walking distance can anyone tell me the most logical culprit. I have 148,000 miles on it and I have never had any problems with the truck and it has been very dependable. I tried the on/off/on/off/on thing to see it there is any code of the problem but nothing reported.
Thanks for your help,
Liam

for some unknown reason i think, on '99's only, the key trick doesn't work to read codes. youo might want to try a code reader before throwing parts at it. if you're lpugs were dry, i don't think it's any of the parts you listed. more than likely, fuel pump/ relay/ fuse.

check for codes first.

Daddio,
Well I checked it with the code checker and no codes were reported. So now what?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should I check the "splice"?

do you here the fuel pump at all? you can check fuel pressure at the fuel rail. there is a port there. you'll need a tester that you should be able to either buy, like at Harbor Freight or parts house. or rent one maybe from Autozone.

Also, try swapping the fuel pump relay with a known good relay like the a/c or horn relays.

Daddio,
I don't hear the pump when I turn on the ignition. I will try to swap the relays like you suggested.
Thanks,
Liam

Daddio,
Well I swapped the relays and they were fine. So I figured I would back up a bit and just make sure I was getting spark. Turned out I wasn't. Since I just replaced the cap. rotor and plugs I figured the next link in the chain was the wires. Turned out the coil wire was fried. Now it starts and runs, but...
The truck still hesitates alot and it died on me at a stop sign today. To get it started I put the gas pedal to the floor as I was cranking and it finally came back to life.
Since I figure it must be something simple can it be clogged fuel injectors? Or should I look somewhere else? I put some STP fuel injector cleaner in with today's fill up as a precaution. If it is clogged injectors can I clean them? What else can I do solve this fuel problem.
Thanks again for all your help, you guys are the greatest.
Liam

Hi, You should check out the IAC control. You can reset it by the following method. If your engine dies - DON'T TURN OFF THE KEY. Leave in in the on position. Now go and open the hood and disconnect one of the battery cables. Leave off for at least 5 min. Now turn the key to the off position. Reconnect the battery cable. Now turn key to on position but don't start it yet. Wait 5 seconds, Now start engine. It should be fine now. This is a quick way to reset the IAC control.
