Subject: Clogged cat

Message:
Just noticed last evening while letting my truck warm up that my exhaust isnt flowing as freely as it should. My first guess is the cat is starting to clog. I know the cat is going bad but didnt realize just how bad it's.

Truck is a 1994 Dodge Dakota 4WD V6 with the orginal exhaust. (stock) I'm not familiar with exhaust systems or catalic converters.... What is a good exhaust to put on this truck? Can I have the cat cleaned out so I dont need to buy one of these too? The emmission law in Pa only requires a visual so it only has to look like it's there not necessary work.

What damage can a clogged cat cause? I hope I didnt damage the motor or anything. It's not completely clogged but well on it's way.

Please help! This old girl has been very faithfull. I have 168,000 on her and would love to see 200,000+.

Thanks
Marster

One of the effects that produces a cloged cat. converter its a lock of power, and the performance of your engine its not the same as it should. Once the cat. converter is cloged it has to be replaced. you don't have to buy an original, just get an universal cat converter, I got mine on line and i just paid close to 80 bucks, and onces you get your new cat. conv. take your truck to a muffler shop and they will charge you 75 bucks to put it in.

here is the link of the site were I got mine. Just find the right one for your truck if you are not sure, give them a call they will help ya!
I hope it helps!

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to be needing a complete exhaust. Not sure till I take it off but I think pieces from the cat have logged in the muffler. Will know once I start to take everything apart.

I have noticed poor gas mileage and somewhat poor performance.....but not servere. I like to do the work myself to save some bucks. Doesnt look to difficult since I will probably need to replace the cat (or clean it out) and complete exhaust.

How do you get the cat apart to clean it out? If I have to buy another cat, I will but I perfer to try and clean this one out.

Is there any damage this could have caused the motor? Things I may need to check or replace???

Replacing the catcon is easy and not necessarily expensive, if you go universal. The OEM is expensive. I use Walker brand exhausts from NAPA. They work fine.

A clogged cat can back up and melt your EGR transducer and ruin the EGR valve. Other than that, it will just make the engine work harder. But are you sure that's the issue here?

Bob. thanks for the reply.

Yes. I am sure it's the cat. It has been rattleing for awhile now. Plus I put my hand over the tailpipe and the airflow is definitly restricted.

How can I tell if the EGR is bad? I dont even know what or where this is located. I havent driven it much with the air restriction and wont drive it now since I see what is going on.

Thanks again for your reply

On my brother's truck (now mine), when his cat clogged, he replaced the EGR transducer, which is a black plastic coin-shaped assembly at the passenger rear corner of engine. It attaches to the EGR valve itself with vacuum hoses. The hot exhaust backed up from the catcon, burned the rubber diaphragm inside the EGR valve and went on to melt the EGR transducer. He replaced the transducer, not knowing the catcon was bad, and it melted the new one. Then he had the dealer do the job. They were corrupt, charged $750 just for the catcon part. They're about $350 OEM at most dealers. And a universal one can be $80 to $180. If you don't see melted parts on that corner of the engine, you're OK.

The entire pipe w/cat is about $130 and since you are replacing the entire exhaust that would be the fastest and easiest route.
I replaced mine from the manifold pipe back for under $200.
perfect fit.

Converters cannot be cleaned. When they rattle the insides have melted and have come loose from the walls.

Now if your cat is clogged, feed it some furball medicine.....LOL

ill tell you from personal experiance. everyone has herd about people reeming cats out with a piece of rebar....dont do it just replace the cat. it sounds as if its at a higher pitch at high rpm's and it really sounds like garbage on a v6. just take out your muffler keep the factory 2.5 inch pipes and replace with a flowmaster 40 or 50 series sounds great but not rediculous....or however you spell that....PS the hairball thing was kinda funny.

Tyler, I hate to break this to you but it is impossible for a glasspak to perform the duties of a catcon. Any competent inspection station willl spot that a mile away.

That's how mine sounds, with an OEM catcon and a Walker muffler. Sounds good.
