3.9L 1989 4x4 dodge dakota. How do you use the paperclip method to get the check engine codes to flash on the dash? Or is there another way with this year of chrysler product?

I've done this on fords before.

Tim, you don't use the paper clip trick on the Dodges, what you need to do is turn the ignition key to the on possition, not start, 3 times,
on/off/on/off/on the 3rd time leave it on and watch the "Check eng" light, if there are any codes, it will flash the codes, example code 55 will be flash/flash/flash/flash/flash pause flash/flash/flash/flash/flash. By the way code 55 means the computer is finished with codes.
Mine is an '88, and I think the 89 is the same.
