Subject: The next mod J J Auto ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 02 Quad cab 3.9 v6 4x4 auto 70000 miles
The mods I have done are
v8 throttle body
NGK plugs
brass cap and rotor
good plug wires
relocate IAC
relocate crank position sensor
super chips programmer
K&N filter

I have been very happy with the mods. The true power is probably 15% gain total. The mileage is maybe 1.5 to 2 miles per gallon on average. Best I have got is 19 and that was really watching my speed. Freeway over the MT pass doing 65 mph.
With the tire size corrected to the speedo I am turning 1800 rpm at 70mph. What next?
Thanks for all the help. Makes it nice not to reinvent the wheel and use good info from some else.

I would get some Harland Sharp roller rockers. Best bang for the buck, in my opinion. You can use same push rods, no altering valve covers, if your careful, reuse valve cover gaskets. Your just out the cost of the roller rockers, and the time your truck is down doing it. Some blue thread lock, torque wrench, and a weekend.

After the rockers

a low restriction muffler and headers

Bosch FMS design 2 #21 injectors 00 and up #21
92 to 99 #19 this will smoth out the motor
across the intire rpm range and a smother idle
these 4 hole spray over the factory 1 hole will
give you better fuel atomization very noticeable
power increase mid and top end also

last of all an MSD 6a box and 8207 coil 8.5mm
wires

Than your mods will be complete

adding these mods your mileage should be 3mpg or
a little more from where you started stock

There is one other thing you can do but it
requiers pulling the intake off and around $40
for gaskets
Gasket match the intake flange ports on the 02
there is no center devider and the stock runner
length will help low and mid range power

The stock intake runner length is aprox 16"
and provides a burst in flow right around
1500rpm with the port match a 10 to 12hp
gain right at 2000rpm on a 4x4 the gasket match
is really all you want to do to keep the power
down low
best power 1500 to 3500rpm

A 14" length the burst will move up to 2000rpm
with around a 15hp gain at 3000rpm this is for
a guy who likes to race on the street
best power 2000 to 4000rpm

A 12" length will raise the burst to 2500rpm
and peak at 3500rpm this is for a 1/4 mile drag truck
best power 3000 to 5000rpm

Your max torque is at 3000 3200rpm 230 stock at
the crank

Have fun and just think how this stuff helped your
power and gas mileage and there are some who say
the mods do nothing HA HA these guys have issues
with there trucks and no mod will help until they
straighten out there trucks

When all your sensors are working properly your
plugs will be a light tan sandy color and almost
all of these mods are noticeable some more than
others

With my new cam I am pulling just as well as a
318 225 230 rear wheel and right around 300
torque but my heads are cleaned and polished

Here is another mod that gets more involved all
the heads need is a good cleanup and polish
removing as little as posible the low end torque
will begain to drop real fast with any porting on
the V6

Unless you plan on nitrious or forced induction
than port it

Always use the head gaskets from mopar the after
market gaskets are thicker and have a bigger
crush size and will actualy knock you compression
down slightly and you do not want that

With the factory gaskets and a .021 mill you will
be just about 9.5 to 1 stock is 9.2 to 1

The best way to do that is to use a boost timing
control like the MSD leave your timing the same
than when it comes under boost the timing can be
retarded from in the cab with a knob

retarding the timing under normal operation will
hit torque and gas mileage

start with a 5 degree retard than slowly drop
down until you just hear a ping than go 1 degree
more

You can set this up for right around $100

That is why you start with lots of retard and move
down slowly

The MSD boost retard control will go from 0 to
10 degrees retard most will run a hundred shot
with just a few degrees of retard unless you are
shooting at to low an rpm 3000rpm is a good place
to boost wide open throttle only that is why I said
to start with 5 degree's the MSD is adjustible
1/2 degree at a time right from in the cab a real
nice setup we use them with the super chargers
also and again most run fine with a 6 to 8psi
boost with just a few degree's retard some even
ran at 0

The colder your motor is running the les retard
you will need that is why the adjustible system
is so nice you can tweak it for the weather
conditions in a few seconds

I also hope you have at least 5000 miles befor
you use the nitrious so its seated in

We have used nitrious on many V6 trucks even some
with over 100,000 miles and the lower ends held
up very well if you go over 100 than you would
need to have the crank modded and use the
heavyer rods and some fordgd pistons than you can
safly run 150 200 shot with some good 318 h or
I beam rods

That is what the local off road racing team is
doing in there straight line mud drag trucks
and they are reving them 6,000 rpm safly

It all comes down to how much a guy is willing
to spend and what he wants to do with his truck

They have 1 drag truck with a 6 running on nitro
pulling over 400hp that truck I rode in its just
crazy and scared the crap out of me I was waiting
to see pistons and rods flying but it did not
happen

But they also run simulations on there engine
dyno to break them in and give them a basic tune
before they go into the truck

Its cool to watch this it varies the speed and
load for a straight 6 hours all by it self
while all the pyramides are watched and all the
values are set if they go brhond it will idle the
motor for 2 min and than shut down

After that they install the motor and run it on
the chassie dyno give it another tune and
simulation than fine tune at the track

Il tell you these serious racing guys do a lot
of work and testing but they do win a lot of races
and have some good sponsers that pay for almost
all of it

They let me use there dynos free but in return we
do all there paint and body work for cost so it
works out well when we install sc's turbos or
nitrious systems on all diff vehicles having the
ability to watch the A/F ratio on these vehicles
is worth the vehicles weight in gold to me

We have been working with this team for over 20
years now
