Subject: Dynomax 17443 Exhaust Performance?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been searching this site for people using the Dynomax 17443 single in/out exhaust system with 2.75" piping, and cant seem to find any. I know Larry said he was going to try it in '05 but no results. The muffler in this system is the 17797 Super Turbo instead of the 17748 everyone seems to recommend.
I have a 1994 dak 3.9L V6 239 Ext Cab SLT 4X4 102k miles with no real mods except FMS#19 injectors and an exhaust from the previous owner which is now rusted out from the muff back. (muffler is a "flow-Pro" necked up to a 3" tail pipe). It is pretty darn loud in the cab but idle is deep, overall a loud deep sound while driving - just in case anyone was curious.
I would like to replace the whole system (Cat, muff, and tail pipe) I have been looking into the MagnaFlow Cat by carsound and the dynomax exhaust. I would like to hear my engine, have a gorgeous deep idle, and sound decent while cruising around in a V6. Any takers?? I know these newer trucks sound different, so anyone in the 92-96 year range probably applies to this post I would assume?

Thanks guys!

I did try the 2 3/4" system but did not like
it

Was loud and had a low end torque loss

What I did was build a resonator and instaled
it into the tip of the tail pipe than it was
ok but when I seen the pacesetter dual system
on sale at truckperformance.com for under $300
I bougt it and instaled it and built some
resonators for the tips to tune the back pressure

On a 2 wheel it would be fine but with a 4x4
you want all the low end you can grab

If you like loud its ok I dont like my truck
so loud

Thanks for responding to my question Larry. And yes I do want the torque with my 4X4, the snow gets pretty thick here in Southeast Alaska :)

I wanted to double check with DynoMax, so I gave them an e-mail and they responded within 2 business days (pretty good I thought).
This is what I asked for anyone interested;

I have been trying to find the right exhaust system, and the only "fit" I could find was the 17743 kit which is the 2.75" which is a little overkill for the original 2.5" exhaust. My question is; Can I use the DynoMax SS tail pipe 54140 and the DynoMax Super Turbo Muffler 17748 to create a 2.5" system without bumping into something down there? I suppose my main concern is the tail pipe not fitting (summitracing said it only fit the newer models '97-'99)

Their reply;
Thank you for your inquiry for Dynomax Exhaust. We appreciate your interest in our products. In regards to your 1994 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9L, the cat back system #17443 is a 2.75" diameter, and is a 1/4" larger than OE. We have not had any issues with the system being too high flowing on the 3.9L option.
As for the 54140, this tail pipe will only fit the 1997-1999 frame years and will not rout correctly for your 1994 vehicle.

At any rate - they didn't say anything about the DynoMax Super Turbo 17748 on my application but figured I'd trust everyone's experience on this forum.
I kept searching on this forum for more info on that exhaust system (17743 - 2.75")and I think you (Larry) said the muffler in the system would blow you out of the cab - which had me concerned. so I have to ask; where would you place this system "loud wise" in the scale like so: (this may be way off)

loud
Flowmaster 40
?Dynomax 17743? w/out resonator
?Pacesetter duals? w/out resonators
Flowmaster 50
Dynomax 17748
Flowmaster 70
soft

I am also curious with the 2.5" exhaust system (which I have never had) and the dynomax 17748 muffler. Can you hear your engine through all rpm ranges (can you not hear the engine at all in the cab)?, I've read that the idle sounds like a V8 (is this true and do they mean a loud or soft V8)?

Oh Geeze, I'm not trying to write a novel so I'll stop while I am ahead. (what ever kind of oxymoron that is).

Thanks Again,
-AK Nick

I installed this system in my 95 v6 Dakota 2wd about 4 years ago. I liked it sounds great, then about a year later I decided to cut the cat out it sounded deeper never noticed a loss in power was still able to smoke the v8's

The 17748 is just right with a factory 2.5 tail
you will pickup power everyware over the stock
system

Its a great setup and actualy shows more low end
torque than other systems and is reasonalble
in price

They are quit at crusing speed rap nice under
excelleration and sound great at idle

After a 1000 miles they get a little loader and
deeper sounding yes you can hear the rap in
the cab under excelleration but very quit crusing
no hum or cab buzz

Thanks Larry and Dakruzr for the information. I guess my biggest fear is not being able to hear my truck, I have gotten used to the loudness from my flo-pro muffler and am curious to see what happens when I install the Dynomax Super Turbo 17748 with the magnaflow cat. The only thing I need now is a tail pipe. I suppose the local exhuast shop could do this? If not, do you guys now of anyone who sells a tail pipe for the 94 dak 3.9 with the 2.5" pipe (stainless would be very nice as well).
Thanks!
