Ignition pick up is in the dist. it tells the computer when to break the ground on the coil so the coil will fire the spark plug. Most of the time they usually don't give much trouble.
As for the actual operation, it builds current and as the reluctor wheel turns it breaks the current then that info goes to the computer then the computer completes the ground circuit so the coil will fire the spark plug. It happens very quickly, many times a minute, depending of course on engine RPM.
I hope that helps.
Good Luck

If its a mutiport mag motor the pickup in the
dist only tells the injectors when to fire

And there is a crank sensor pass side behind the
head in the bell housing all this sensor does
is tell the computer where #1 is and sets your
base timming which should be at 10 BTDC the
computer than completly controls the timing
up to a 44 degree advance under light load
crusing as soon as the map reads a load timing
is pulled out

If this is an older truck than its all in the
dist with 2 sides start pickup and run pickup

The trottle body injection is controled by the
o2 and map throttle position and load

All the older throttle body trucks got around
20mpg
