My '95 3.9 auto has started acting up by running badly (I'll ask about that one later..) and my mechanic friend told me how to use the CEL for codes but we noticed there was no light on my dash at all when the ignition was turned on. Figuring the bulb had gone I took it apart to find it had LITERALLY gone! No bulb at all in there - or the generator light socket. That told me the previous owner had removed it for a reason and sure enough it came on and stayed on when I fitted a new one ( the generator light was fine, though - so no idea why that was removed) Anyway, as the bulb is on all the time and it won't go through the test sequence when I flick the key on and off (hold on third light flash) I'm stuck! What does it mean when it's permanently on?? I have done the key flicks correctly as I have another Dakota and it works fine when I do it to that.

I'm thinking maybe there is a short in the wiring harness or there could be a ground in the switch that is turning it on perminately. If it is a short in the harness it could be either due to chaffing or moisture or both.

Have you done a 'master' reset yet ?
Disconnect battery negative " ground cable"
turn key to on and start position , then back to off , then reconnect battery .
Computers , 'electronics' can be weird at times..

with the Neg. terminal off the battery
turn key to cranking position and hold for 30 seconds

reconnect cable
start truck (do not touch gas-throttle)
let idle for 30 seconds
shut off and repeat 2 more times

Thanks for tips. I'll go try the master re-set now. Hopefully the previous owner didn't know about it and just pulled the bulb to hide it and this is all that's wrong. I'll let you know how it turns out...

Well, the system seems to have reset itself overnight to some extent. Before I did the master reset I tried the test method once more and it started running the check sequence! The CEL still stays on permanently with the engine running but at least it ran the codes.
I got; 1 - 2, 2 - 1, 4 - 3, 4 - 3, 2 - 1, 5 - 5.

Not sure why it would be repeating the 4 - 3 and the 2 - 1 codes but will look them up and see what they are. Maybe old faults repeating and I should do the master reset anyway and try again...?

Russ if it was me I would reset the PCM as mentioned above. Then recheck for codes, If you still have any post them and we can tell you what they are.
12 = battery disconnected
55 = End of codes
You will most likely allways get those 2 codes.

If the codes you listed above stay, Here is a list.

21 Oxygen sensor signal doesn't change
(stays at 4.3-4.5V). Probably bad oxygen sensor

# 43 Cylinder misfire
OR
# 43 Problem in power module to logic module interface

These are from allpar.com

1 - 2, 2 - 1, 4 - 3, 4 - 3, 2 - 1, 5 - 5.

12 begain diagnostics

21 O2S Stays at center O2 shorted to voltage
(this sensor is toast and needs to be replaced)

43 Ignition coil circuit #
Open or short in number # coil circuit. Indicates that the ignition coil's peak primary circuit current is not achieved with the maximum dwell time.

(this can be caused either by a bad connection, a
bad crank sensor or a bad coil in most cases its
the coil

55 end of test

Any time you have a constant MIL (malfungtion
indicator light ) on there is a sensor that is
totaly shot

What you need to do is go to ngk.com and get a new
o2 sensor OEM the same sensor volts 5v being
shorted can also trip the ignition code sounds
like the o2 is internal shorted to ground and this
will lower the supply sensor voltage and it will
run like crap

replace the o2 do a hard reset and than run the
truck

hard reset, remove batt cable turn key all the way
to start and hold 1 min, shut off and reconect
batt and start

A hard reset will erase all stored trouble codes

Thanks to all for the advice on this one! I went back to the truck and did the master reset as suggested. This cleared the codes (apart from 12 and 55 obviously) and the light now goes out when the truck is running. I realize this only clears the codes and doesn't fix anything so I figured I'd drive the truck to warm and see what codes appeared after it started acting up on me as it does after about 3 or 4 miles (feels like it's running out of gas and almost comes to a stop then after letting off the pedal and re-applying a few times it always takes off again). Typically, it wouldn't act up this time! I can't see that replacing a missing CEL bulb and resetting would fix anything so I'll give it a longer run today. I figure the coil and o2 sensor are likely the culprits as the codes and you guys suggest. I have an '89 3.9 4x4 that I plan to turn into a plow truck so maybe the parts will be the same for me to do a try out from before I head off to buy new parts...? A clue for a possible other fault is that a few months ago the regulator on top of the fuel pump had a pin-hole leak next to the spout that a mechanic friend removed and soldered up for me. Would it be possible it didn't like the heat and is now failing? Would that show up as a code if it was? Thanks. Will let you know how extended test run goes.

Russ, judging by what Larry posted above that the O2 is the root of the problems. if those same codes from earlier coome back, the first thing i'd do is change the O2. that may also cure the coil code. then go from there.

Well having given it a longer run the light is back on (although truck is still running ok at the moment) and now just shows 21 - o2 sensor as you guys have suspected. I'll order up a new one and see if I can get the old one out myself. I hear they don't like to come out of the exhaust without a fight and usually some heat. Maybe I'll be lucky... Thanks again to all above for help on figuring this one out.
