Message:
For an 87 dakota 3.9 liter 6cyl., can I get the codes using a key on/off type of procedure? I don't have an ODB reader.

Also, is there a procedure to clear codes? The service manual claims the codes are cleared if the connector at the spark controller is disconnected for a minute. However, that doesn't seem to work.

Thanks for the help.

Yes - see this for more info

And - need to disconnect battery for a few minutes to reset.
Usually helps if you turn the key to start and back off again - while battery is disconnected.

I tried the on/off sequence. I did not get any flashing dash lights. It doesn't appear to provide codes on this vehicle. Any other ideas on how to get codes?

Turn key on/off than on/off than on/off now turn
key on and watch check engine light

Is the 87 not a carbed truck

A lot of the older trucks you just turned the key
on'off twice than on

Light is binary which means 2

5 flash pause 5 flash this would be 55 end of
diagnostics

Find yourself an Auto Zone they will scan for
trouble codes free than just write them down
and go from there

Now on the carbed daks there were 2 diff setups

1 a reactive carb this system also had an o2
sensor

2 straight carb this had no o2 sensor

You can clear the codes by doing a hard reset
disconect batt cable turn key all the way to
start and hold 1 min

This will drain all the capasitors in the computer
and clear any trouble codes

shut key off and reconect batt and start

We tried the on/off procedure. Both 2 cycles and 3 cycles. We get nothing.

The 87 is carbed.

I can't get to an auto zone right now as the engine won't start.

We have an O2 sensor. It is a single wire sensor.

I will try the hard reset to clear the codes.

Thanks for all the tips.

I tried several times with no results. Both trying 2 cycles of on/off and then on and 3 cycles. I get no flashing light on the dash. If there are no codes, would I still get the 55 code for the end?

Thanks for the help.

yes, you would at least get teh 55 code. are you turning the key on and not start? and i think your suppsed to do it on/off/on/off/on in about 15 seconds. if you're taking too long it won't work.

daddio,
I am fairly certain we did the procedure correctly. We did not go to start. We still get nothing. We also are doing it well within 15 seconds.
