Depending on the car/truck but in most cases for every 5 MPH you slow down you can pick up 1 to 2 MPGs (highway)

Has anyone else noticed a huge increase in tailgaters?

Shutting off is a very bad idea

No vac for breaks no power stearing and poping
into netral is not a good thing to tell people
to do what if they go a little to far and hit REV

OUCH all that money I saved on gas will now go
for a new transmission LOL

BAD BAD IDEA

Just let off the gas on the hills

With the computer controled lockup converter
anytime the throttle is closed all the way the
computer will unlock the converter when it sees
the TPS at idle closed position

one good thing about that is if you let off all
the way and than hit the gas a 1/4" you will
be out of lockup makes passing easier and uses
less gas than stomping on it to get a downshift
this will help mileage some

Driving under the speed limit is not always the
answer either, most dakotas at 50 are bogging
and gas mileage will drop the motor needs to be
in its power and torque band when crusing to get
good mileage.

I always set my cruse right on 60mph and let her
roll

If you live where there are losts of stop lights
watch them when you come up on them if red start
slowing up sooner what I do is slow down than it
will turn green before I have to come to a
complete stop than excellerate back up moderatly
maybe that is also why my brakes lasted 100,000
miles on my dak 4x4, usualy on a 4x4 like mine
that sees a lot of mud water and sand they do not
make it that far 50, 60,000 on a 4x4 that does
off roading is more normal for brake jobs.

I have some customers that get new brakes every
30,000 miles, there toast

I seen a test on a speed channel program one day
that freaked me out.

This guy would get upto speed at a fast rate and
shut his car off and restart at every stop light
and got virtualy the same mileage as driving
normal

Keeping your vehicle in a good state of tune,
checking your tire pressure reguarly, I check
mine once a week I also run my tires at 36psi
1 pound more than recomended that will help
a little

when you can run with less throttle do it the
higher the vac the better the milage they even
make vac guages just for that they say power
at low vac and economy at high vac using one
of these will help you adjust your driving habits
for better mileage

keeping the windows closed having less drag will
help run your vents with the fan and open rear
sliding window

A tonno cover will reduce drag, don't have any
flags or strafoam foot balls on your antenna
anything you can do to reduce drag will help

A vehicle that sits closer to the ground will
have less turbulance and drag under the car

Do some internet investigating and find the old
chrysler air flow car, it had venting all over to
let the air flow tru and reduce drag on the car

There are many things you can do to help mileage
that can be learned shuting the motor off is
not a good way to go.

driving habits do make a diferance, many years ago
my oldest brother had a 1969 dodge charger with
a 383 mag 4 speed 3.23 gears when I drove the car
I got like 17 18mpg, now he drove the car and
would get 19 20 mpg all the time, when my middle
brother would drive the car he only got 15mpg LOL
he always had a lead foot would fly upto stop
signs and lights and hit the brakes hard and is
still the same way today

Driving habits are hard to change and relearn

Stop lights that reminds me of a good storie

I moved up here to northern wisconsin in 1970, my
sister was dating a guy from up here well ended
up getting married to him and had 8 kids but
anyway she was going to schoo; in green bay to
become a nurse.

We decided to drive down to green bay to visit her
I had a 1969 chrysler newport 383 2bl 2.76 rear
this car always got 20mpg or better, I let him
drive when we got into green bay he was running
tru all the red lights asked him what the hell
he was doing.

He had never seen a stop light in his life than
said I wondered what those were for LOL man I made
him pull over and let me drive

can you beleave that never seen a stop and go
light and he was 26 years old

Get one of the gas mileage books and read it
there are many ways to save gas that work
PLEASE do not shut your motor off when driving
on busy streets just to dangerious you could
hurt yourself or someone else

I for one do not like to see people get hurt
from pure stupidity

I tried this (hypermiling) with my truck as follows:

When I pulled up to stop lights, I put it in neutral. Coasting down hills in neutral. Pulse and glide (in neutral) while in traffic. Fun to watch the overhead mpg meter go up to 99 miles per gallon going down hills, but on average, I only got about 1 extra mile per gallon. Never (intentionally) shut down the engine while coasting in neutral.

Would not recommend coasting in neutral around corners - my engine stalled while doing that a couple of times and I lost my power stearing. You just turn the key while coasting and start her up again, but still scary in corners.

I decided to stop doing it because I figured it's hard on the transmission - shifting in and out of neutral while the truck is moving. Probably would be okay under 30 mph, but for only 1 mpg extra, it's not worth risking transmission damage.

Change fluids (differential, transmission, crankcase oil) over to synthetics. I noticed a significant change for the better while coasting after doing that. Check your brakes for excessive drag.

Anyhow, these daks suck so bad on gas mileage, even hypermiling doesn't work. Nothing works. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Want good gas mileage? Give it up and get a Prius (I got mine on order).

One other thing. According to my overhead mpg meter, I get my best gas mileage in the 55-65 mph range (22+). Slower (25-30) mph, you get about half that or less. Faster and it drops off quick. Up hills, it drops off quick (to about 8-11 mpg). Down hills, it goes way up 30-45 mpg. On the average right now I'm getting 18.2 mpg (combined hwy/city, no heavy traffic).

Hypermiling (as described in my last post), I get a little over 19 mpg.

When the traffic comes back after school starts, I expect it to go back down to 16-17 mpg, closer to 16.

larry you totally are right on this one ...common sense should tell everyone that you cant do it with automatic transmission but i didnt tell you how i do it ...first i have 3 dakotas...the one i go to work with is a v6 sport 2001 2x4 not a 4x4 ...only on the HIGHWAY rt 8 rt 15 can i do this on going to work every day....i get to 75 mph and depress clutch.....turn off key till engine dies.....turn the key back on,,put in neutral...coast till 55..watching the mirrors....if i get in traffic i keep it in od till i get and open lane....then i repeat...are people that come in here that stupid that you have to explain how to do it or do they just dont know how to google hypermileing.....it works for me.....just hope this clear up your last post ...face it....your a great mech...larry....but i see all the numerous costly mods you tell people to do...and it kills gas mileage not increases it....ya more hp is good if your towing but its not the wtg with gas still @ 4 dollars a gallon......

harry from ct: so what kind of mpg are you getting using the engine on/off technique with manual transmission?

Like I said, the best I can do with my auto is 19+ mpg (combined city/hwy). I don't shut my engine off - I could but it seems like it'll break something and cost me more than I'm saving.

The problem is this: anyone can get pretty good mpg by driving highway speeds. Hell, if I only drove highway in light traffic, I'd get over 22 mpg, maybe up to 27 mpg. The real test comes when you have to drive slow in start/stop traffic. That is where the truck is really inefficient & you can't start/stop your engine in that environment.

Hybrid engines do all of this automatically - engine shuts off when sitting still, starts when you hit the accelerator, coasts going down hills etc. That's why hybrids get better mileage in traffic than on hwy. Sure would be nice if someone could figure out how to rig up automatic engine start/stop on a dak - but the starter is just not designed for that - something will wear out or break.

Best you can do is figure out how to decrease friction & drag in the drivetrain/engine. Ignition mods don't work because the computer just tweeks the mixture until it's back where it used to be.

ive been hypermilling for the past3 month and it has been great.i pop it in neutral coating to stop lights or down hills. where i live its pretty hilly so im able to leave it in neutral a good bit of the time. i haveent had neproblems and transmittion still pulls just as hard as ever. and not to mention getting close to 18 mpg from 15. i also dont take my rpms higher than 2000. this means i dont go faster than 70 mph. works like a charm i suggest it very much so.

"Driving under the speed limit is not always the

But my truck shifts into OD at 32-35 mph and lockup before 40, and if I'm driving suburban or rural roads where the limit is 40, I get better mileage than at 55 or 60, because I don't NEED to be in the power band. If I'm going on a fairly level road and there's no lugging because I only need very light throttle pressure to maintain my speed, I get higher gas mileage. Engine is turning about 1400 RPMs. At 55 it's doing about 1600 in lockup and at 65 it's doing 1800 in lockup - 3.55 axle.

harry from ct: sorry for being a skeptic, but 47 mpg? You're repeatedly getting 47 mpg AVERAGED over a full tank of gas in a 2001 V6 Dodge Dakota? If it were a Honda Civic, yeah. I can get 99 mpg (by my overhead mpg meter) for a minute if I'm going down hill in neutral at 60 mph... but I don't report that number because no one will believe it.

You've only got $1.00 to go to break even and get it down to the REAL price gas is.

You still will have to get it below $1.10 per gallon for a while to get reimbursed all the money the evil stole from you over the course of this decade.

Just look at what is happening to the quality of life in USA, and don't forget to flush afterwards.
