I have a 87 Dakota with the 3.9 liter 6 cyl. engine. Because of a rear main seal leak, I decided to rebuild the engine. I also had some intermittent issues with the engine just dying. It seemed like a fuel supply issue so while I have the carb off, I am rebuilding it as well. The rebuild kit I got from the auto parts store has the gaskets but not much else. My book says that if the power piston binds at all, it should be replaced. Mine binds. So now I have a couple of questions.

Do I really need to replace the power piston?

If so, where can I get a kit that contains this and perhaps other internal carburetor parts?

Could this power piston occasionally binding be the cause of my engine dying?

The carb is a Holley 6280.

Thanks for the help.

Mark

Larry,
Thanks for the tip and the advice. I took a quick look at summitracing and I couldn't find a rebuild kit for the Holley 6280 carburetor I have. I will look some more but if you can find it and post the link, that would be great.

Thanks again,
Mark

Gentlemen,
I contacted summitracing and they don't have a kit for my 6280 carburetor that contains the power piston. I did the live chat thing and the tech guy said he never heard of a power piston. He suggested I contact Holley. I talked to their tech guy and he said that the numbers stamped in the Holley 6280 2 brl. carb I have are for a 4 barrel carb. and he couldn't help me. I am not making this up. I don't understand how Holley cannot know about their own product.

Anybody have any ideas?

Should I just replace the carb with a new one? If so, what should I get? I have a 1987 Dakota with the 3.9 liter 6 cyl engine.

I appreciate any help as I am lost now.

your calling it a power piston
are you sure its not the power valve?

Holley was notorious for blowing them out

I was just reading your post.

*Should I just replace the carb with a new one?*

If you can get a 4bbl intake or if not the 4 to 2 adapter. (transdapt & Mr gasket make them)

Then I would go with a Holley 390 4bbl, Alot easier to rebuild and find parts for. The new ones even have electric chokes.

Its a power valve and 6280 is a 2bbl Holley. It was only around 2 years then Mopar injected the 3.9.
The part# for the valve is 4186125 for the vacuum power valve
and 4267243 for the mechanical valve
repair pkgs are 4342859 gskt pkg
and 4342860 parts pkg unlikely still avail but i believe the power valves are still are.
email me if you want the carb diagram and Ill send it to you

Gentlemen,
I really appreciate the comments. I am calling it a power piston because that is what the 1987 Dodge Dakota vehicle service manual calls it. It apparently is not the power valve as the tech guy at Holley suggested that and the pictures of the power valve are not at all like the power piston I have.

I'm new to this forum. Are we able to post pictures? Would it help if I post some pictures of what I have?

Partsmanager,
I believe I have a diagram. It came with the rebuild kit that I bought. However, I can use all the help I can get so I would be grateful for a diagram from you. How do I go about emailing you?
