Hope you guys dont mind. My last question's thread got pretty long so here's an update on my 94 and no fire.

Larry ought to write a book. Larry's in depth description of checking the timing on my 94 was spot on. My rotor was pointing to #1 plug when I first started checking TDC. The cyl mark on the 94 distributer is not the same as #1 post. It's about 10 - 15 degrees off. After reading Larry's email over and over and looking back at the Haynes book I bumped the engine over again to TDC (compression stroke). THis time the rotor was off 20 - 30 degrees from the cyl mark. Even more the next time I bumped it over! SO, I think the timing chain is toast.

After talking to the seller, he doesn't remember if the sprockets were replaced with the chain when he had the job done 6 thousand miles ago! That would explain why the engine was quiet for a couple thousand miles but got noisy again.

I don't think I'm up for a timing chain replacement. Maybe 30 years ago. It's off to Tuffy. This 94 sure is different from the last Dodge I had worked on as a teen - any one remember "Job Rated" ?

Tis site and the guys that help here are what all mechanics should be - helping because they like their Dodges and like their work, not just to punch a time clock.

Let you know Tuffy finds,
(But you probably already know)

it sounds, from your description that the engine probably jumped time. does it even backfire or anything?

also, what kind of fool only changes the chain and not the gears? if they didn't change the gears they probably didn't do anything with the tensioner.

isn't that the same Tuffy Auto that said that the engine noise was normal? you might want to find another garage to do the work for you or do it yourself.

the V6 comes apart the same way the old 318's did

you just need to remove the alt a/c bracket first
and there is a bolt behind the center idler
pully don't forget that one

the sprokets will ware just as much if not more
just replacing the chain is a sign of a real
moron

Towed the car to Tuffy. They arent the shop that did the chain. THey havent opened it up yet. They are not convinced it't the chain/sprocket after listening to it crank over. Sounds like something in the lower end. I had a thought though. Does the distributer run off a helical gear on the oil pump? That might explain why the rotor timing retards an additional 10 degrees every time I crank it over one revolution. A broken gear tooth on the pump???

Also, is this an interference engine? Will the valves hit the cylinders if the cam timing is off?

Thanks again,
Silent for now.
