My check engine light had been going on and off for a while and now it is remained on for a period of time. When I got my car inspected they ran a test and the code P0420 CAT effiecency came up. From what little I know and read it could be a number of things wrong. I would rather not have my entire catylitic converter replaced if it could be something else.

What should I have checked so I don't have to spend a fortune or jump the gun about replacing the converter? Thanks.

Malvo25, what year is your truck? mileage? the Federal Emissions warranty should cover that cat con for 8yrs/80k miles if that is your problem.

If out of that warranty - just get it replaced
at a muffler shop . The aftermarket ones are not
that expensive , and may even flow better than the stock one.

Thanks for the feedback, it is 98 with almost 130,000 miles. I bought it used last year in great condition and little work need to be put into it. Many things I've read imply that it could be O2 sensor or a bad connection somewhere because the check engine light was going on and off. If I do have to get the converter replaced, how much could that run me?
Thanks for the responses thus far.

There a numerous websites if you google cat converter, in fact i just got off of some the first one i clicked on was the www.catalyticconverterwarehouse.com
Depending on your engine size they run in the 150-180 range from them. But then again you might want to look into a hi flow cat because if you need to replace it, it would be a good time to upgrade.

What I would do is go to NGK.com and get the
oem post cat o2 sensor's put them in they are
what the factory instals and they are half the
price dodge charges for them

They are the 1 or 2 o2's behind the converters
depending on what system you have

Don't get the universals because you would have to
solder your old plugs on them

Do not what ever you do use any bosch or other
o2's they do not work right in the dodge trucks
get the NGK NTK from ngk.com.

If it does happen to be the converters you can
get the car sound from truckperformance.com
made by magnaflow for under $100 slip fit you
just cut the old one)s out slip them on and clamp
they are also high flow and will help with power
and gas mileage

Don't jump at replacing them try the sensors first
I have seen 100's of converters with
3 4 and 500,000 miles on them and holding up well

The front pre cat sensors control air/fuel the
rear or post cat sensors tell the computer if the
cat is working properly and on the obd2 trucks
like yours the rear sensors are usualy the
first to fail

It is recomended to replace the sensors at 60 to
80,000 but here again I have seen them go bad in
as little as 10,000 miles and also last upto
3 400,000 miles

If the motor is running well not a lot of blow by
or air/fuel ratio problems they last a long time
but you having the code replace both after cat
sensors and you will probably be just fine

Oh after you have the sensors replaced do a hard
reset, remove batt cable hold the key all the way
to start position for 1 min shut of reconect batt
cable than start and run this will erase any
stored codes in the computer and give you a clean
start with no trouble codes in the memory

If your gas mileage and power are still ok don't
worrie about the front o2 sensors they are most
likly just fine when they go your mileage either
drops or they lean out and create piston ping
if you have none of these symtoms just replace the
back 2 for now
