That's quite a project to say the least. I assume you already have the new engine, and drive train. The first thing you may want to do is remove the old eng./drivetrain. Ok, just a little humor. You will need to get or make engine mounts, you may be able to buy a kit to do the entire change over, if so, you may wind up money ahead, if not, it can still be done just may take a little time to get it done. You will most likely need to buy/make a new trans mount as well. I have done things like this myself, just not this same swap. If you can locate a 9.25 rear end that would be a good up grade to handle the extra power. In 88 the biggest eng. was the 3.9 and it only rated at 120 horse power.
If you have a lot of mechanical experience it shouldn't be too hard, if not you can learn a lot. If know someone who can help you it would help if they know how to handle things like this.
Just remember, its easier to get the eng. in, than hooking up all the rest of the small stuff. Things like the fuel lines, exhaust, shift linkage. That's where the real work comes in. I don't know if the 340 used the same motor mounts as the 318, but if it did that will be a big help, because the 3.9 is the same as, or very close to the 318.
Good Luck

Been a while, but if memory serves me right, the 340 has a different mount on the right hand side than an LA 318.
I wonder when the 9.25 was introduced ? I was thinking it started with the '97 model year, which would make it too wide for an '88, but I could be mistaken on that. If you have to modify a stronger rear to work, I'd go with the older 8.75. I don't think they have the same reputation for problems with the carrier bearings as the 8.25/9.25 rears. Also, once the gearing is set up, you can drop the assembly to change the gears you are running - you just back the axles out, swap the pigs, and reset the axle runout. Makes it easy to run one set on the street, and another ratio at the track.

i was kinda goin towards the 8.75 rearend so i think ill stick with that. what is a good tranny that would go with the 340 & 8.75 im not gonna race it it will be a garage kept show truck but i still want to have the power in case anyone douwts the fact that it would eat their ass on the road. im also gonna do suicide doors, and a el camino bumper with the lights in it, and cover the originals. butterfly air scoop, sittin on some 18" 5-star chrome rims with low pro's.
