92 V6, I didn't drive it for a while and drove the
4 banger Spirit due to gas prices. Well, the car
had to go to the shop today so I fired up the
truck.
Noticed the voltage was running about 17 but
figured the battery was a bit low, so I kept an
eye on it and it came down a bit, but not much.
Stopped and when I came back out the engine
wouldn't start but cranked really well. Checked
relays.and fuses, all was well, so I floored the
gas and it started.
Voltmeter still read high.
Got home, parked it for a while and thought I'd
see if it would start. Usually it starts on the first
crank. Not this time, it spun a few times and
fired-voltage still high. Revved the engine and
watched the meter-it went to 17 volts but it
would drop and the engine would miss then
the meter went right back up. Every time the
engine missed the meter dropped.
Hooked up my DMM to the battery and at idle
I'm getting 16.8 volts.
Battery is just a few months old.
Looks like the rgulator is toast.

I understand the regulator is part of the
computer-is this true?
I hope to heck not, this will get pricey!

if you want to trust this, according to A/Z's website there is no listing for a voltage regulator for a '92 Dak. i know the later models deiinitely have them built into the PCM but don't know for sure on earlier models.
sorry i couldn't be of more assistance.

Take your voltmeter and check the voltage getting to the PCM from the battery. The PCM uses that voltage to command the field circuit on the alternator. Look at the wiring near the battery for damage from battery acid and corrosion. You might also check your grounds too. Most people overlook that side of the circuit. I think PCM battery feed is pin 3, alternator field control is pin 20.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the hints, yes, the regulator is in
the ECU according to the book.
Recently did the splice repair then wire tied it
and retaped it and replaced the battery as it
was getting long in the tooth, so all that is nice
and clean.
Didn't have a chance to check the B+ to the
ECU as I was busy reinstalling the distributor
back into my bike after repairing it.
I did have a look at the wiring harness to the
ECU earlier today, all looked well.
BTW-I did drive it to work and back today, I had
no choice, and when I shut it off it was done.
No start, the check engine light doesn't even
come on.
I went ahead and ordered a replacement ECU
today, it will arrive tomorrow, $85 shipped.
Thanks to the person on another thread who
suggested www.car-parts.com!

I'll let you all know the outcome tomorrow!

Floating ground (bad negative connection, e.g., at battery) can cause this.

UPDATE

Replaced the ECU, it still doesn't start. No spark from the coil, so I open the distributor...it's oily in here! Rotor is coming apart and dist. shaft has lots of slop. Not side to side but rotationally. It's either the distributor or the oil pump gear. I had a known good distributor lying around so I took the p/u out of it and put it and a new cap and rotor (NAPA) in for troubleshooting. I'll replace distributor later.
Still no spark.
The check engine light does not come on when the key is turned to "on", I need to check if it burned out coincidentally at the perfect time.
I do not hear the fuel pump relay when key is turned on, either.
I may go back in and see if my splice repair came apart. I did it rather hastily, and as I work on computers and cameras, wasn't up to my standards. (IOW I did it quick).

The new ECU could be bad, too.

Any ideas appreciated!

Nope, just to be sure I checked it. Had to
unwrap all that purdy tape I put on it. :-(

But it gives me the opportunity to do it again
and make it purdy.

With key on there is 12v @ pin 9 of the ECU
connector, continuity between the ground
strap and block, negative side of alternator
and ground strap bolt on firewall and between
the neg terminal of battery and the two
harness ground points just behind the battery.

I'm still thinking the overcarge situation fried
the original ECU and the new one isn't good,
either.

I have a line on a complete running truck with
200k on the clock for $400. There's some
good parts!
If I get it, I'll be parting out what I don't need.
I'll keep ya posted.

That dist play is a known problem, it stalled out on my truck when my brother owned it. You have to replace the dist. Make sure the O-ring at the base is intact. There should be no oil in the dist. Looks like you have two separate problems.

Have Autozone or someone test your alternator, in case there's an internal connection open.

Yeah, I have another dizzy, just need to get the truck running again, then I'll change it out using larry's instructions on the settings (Thanks, Larry!).

I found a reman ECU fro $150, I may as well get it and know for sure I don't have a bad one.

hey, it's only money. What I don't spend the polititians will try to take...if they don't take it before I get it!
