My mom has a 2002 V6 Dakota, its hard to get started when its cold. It will crank just takes forever to turn over. It seems to help to floor the gas when starting, once started it will die if you try to go before it warms up. The engine light came on the other day so I had her take it to Auto Zone and the test came back with codes p0455, p1281, p0456 and p0442. She bought a new gas cap and tried that and that didn't help and I looked at all the lines and they look good. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe its the canister, could that be it?

Thanks
Jeff

All to the P codes point a vapor leak except P1281, couldnt wait for the truck to get warmed up huh? Shes gonna kill the engine that way!
anyways
You stated that you got a new gas cap, make sure the gas cap is tight, clear the codes and then drive it for a day if the p-codes come back then Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes, you said you did this already but put down cardboard this way you can see if there is any leaks. Also a good place to check is the vent o-ring seal, normally this happens on older trucks but if the truck has sat for a long time without running it is possible.

This sounds like a fuel pump issue. The pressure is leaking down.
try turning the key on and witing for a few seconds before starting.

If you have to hold the throttle to start that
sounds like the TPS or some leaky injectors

I would get the pressure checked 40 to 50psi and
must hold that for at least an hour when off

The vac leak could also be a bad sensor in the
evap system also check the hoses canister drivers
side frame salt will deteriat the hoses

when it dose not start pull a spark plug and see
if wet or dry

The IAC idle air control sol needs to pull back
when the motor is shut down this alows more air
at start up if its not pulling back than this will
also cause the throttle to be presed to start

back of throttle body remove clean both plunger
and hole with carb clean put a little oil on the
o-ring and reinstal when out be sure it is back
off the seat

this is what makes the engine rev up at start
than slow down to idle speed does auto zone
check the sensor around 15 to 20 steps at idle
when motor is reved the steps will go up and than
back down

check these things

Still trying to figure it out cleaned the throttle body found a hose coming off the canister that was cracked and replaced and reset the codes and so far none have came back on. Don't have to give it gas to start now but its still cranking for about 10 seconds before it turns over. I also noticed last night that after 15 min of running the temp. gauge didn't move still on C and checked the radiators overflow and it was bone dry could this be a thermostat? One more thing every time I open the passenger door without the drivers door being open the alarm goes off why is that and is there a way to shut it off.

Thanks
Jeff
