Subject: O2 Sensors
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys,
got a question for ya. It seems all of my o2 sensors have tripped at
the same time. as in they're pulling codes. I've had a scan tool on
it several times erasing codes and such, yet the computer keeps
pulling them back up. It seems very unlikely to me that all 4
sensors would go bad at the same time. i don't want to drop $300
bucks into new sensors and them not do me any good. could it be
a computer problem? any ideas on why they would all trip at once?

O2 sensors are to be changed out at 60,000 to retain reliability.

Are you getting very poor gas mileage? Usually mileage drops by a third or so when they fail. Probably a bad sensor harness ground. And O2 sensors don't have to be changed at regular intervals. The one in my Dak has 179K miles, and the truck tests as clean as any new car. My car's sensor lasted 190K miles, and the Bosch replacement now has 98K miles on it, and it tests as clean as when new in emissions, and gets same gas mileage as new. That's the proof. Don't let these guys get you to waste money.

what the hell todd? thanks to the one real answer from bob lincoln.
other than that, quit wasting my time. But yeah, poor gas mileage,
i've seen worse. 15 mpg ain't bad, i don't think it's where it should
be though. it was strange that they all went out at the same time. i
think i'm going to get under there with the multimeter and check
the voltage coming off the sensors. from what i've read they should
fluctuate back and forth from .1 -.9 volts pretty quickly. the
harness ground is a good idea. i'll also see if i can trace that back
and confirm a good ground. thanks bob

Your right to NO MIRACLE CRAP mods, synthetics roller rocker change throttle body change exhaust headers again simple maintenance would keep your mileage steady, yes theres wear and tear eventually things to need replacement but I see to many part replacing junkies, they must have alot cash to spare hmmmmmmmmmm....

There is one more reason the codes could be coming up, a bad ground, or a broken wire in the o2 sensors. I would check all of the grounds first, then the plugs for the sensors.

"Why does everyone blame the o2 sensors first"??
Because they are usually the problem, although as you pointed out, there are other things that can go wrong.

Good Luck

I guess I am to old for new know it know it alls lol... at that a simple sluggish water thermostat not holding a steady temp could cause a drop in mileage before a 02 and for grounds is to positive or an open circuit come on children whats your jepordary answer now????

I don't tend to be a know it all either we all get stumped every now and then and overlook alot basic stuff they did say 20 or so years when fuel injection first appear on US Domestic cars todays cars,trucks,etc.. still go off simple diagnostic principles to much HI-TECH tools which helps a bunch if you know how to properly use it simple quick pull of codes dont always mean thats always the problem remember these sensors have parameters programed to PCM anything slightest out of this can upset one or more of the following along with not checking simple basics, enough of my so called gargle lesson

check the wirers

4 wires
1 sensor signal to comp
2 ASD volts batt volts key on
3 sensor to comp ground
4 sensor ground

Get a haynes manual there you will find the wire
diagram

On some trucks I have found bad splice in harnas
between the sensors and computer this is a real
pain undoing the harnas to find it

No all 4 sensors wont go all at once unless your
pumping raw gas or oil threw

ngk.com get oem not universal or you will be
soldering your old sensor plugs on

Bob is also right here I have seen sensors
go bad in as little as 10,000 miles I have also
seen some run 250,000 miles with no probs

It is recomended 60 to 80,000 replace but if
your gas mileage and power are good there ok

most when they go run rich some will go lean and
lose power but maintain gas mileage

Be sure you use a good same as factory NGK NTK
if the design is diff question its use a lot
of parts stores sell junk that will fit a
1000 dif aplicationd and they do not last
case design and vent location and size is
a big facter here

Like Larry suggest "check sensor" not just replace because mileage is down theres alot things that can upset your 02's and shorten the life of the sensor, and these sensors are not always in the best location to test so leads to "just replace my mileage will come back" thats why I suggest put this sensor by itself with your scan tool and or laptop and go through some differnt tests as simple as pull off a vacuum line or two to lean or spray some throttlebody spray to richen and different RPM's theres a bunch of basics to do and with a laptop and capturing a good reading(s) in a spreadsheet could pinpoint your problem,I know everyone does not have a laptop or a scan tool but very essential when performing these tests and a digital meter do the same. I tend to be bit technical in my approach not everyone would follow this way but I know good mechanic in a dealership or a garage would if you dont want a boomerang truck visiting you daily... enough of my complex garble happy tuning...

Hey guys. I'm gonna check the voltage coming off the sensors

Bosch?

The 4-prong platinum actually gave me a rough idle and worse gas mileage in several vehicles. The single and dual prong seem to be OK. But I've found regular copper Champions to be the best.
