Subject: wont start/crank
IP: Logged

Message:
v6 3.9 2001, i did a battery relocation and my battery is a bit low, however, when trying to drop the starter to get to the wire, i took off the housing for the coil instead, then pulled the coil to fit it back in the coil then put it all back

now, when i went 2 turn the key, it wouldnt crank, just made a rapid clicking noise, like a quiet air ratchet

no fuses were blown, i checked, all grounds are good, i checked, all wires are securely mounted, i checked

i need my truck running for tomorrow so please help

only thing i can think of is either something with the starter coil/housing is weird, or the low battery+voltage drop from the relocation maybe why, the accessories and lights turn on, so i know im getting power, when i turn the key with the lights on, they dim and flicker

so its either starter problems or battery and voltage drop, im charing the battery right now, please help me figure this out!! i absolutely need this fixed by tomorrow (first day at a new job, no other rides or bus)

will do, it started with about a 12.5-7volt and last i checked, it was up to 12.8 on the charger

im just worried i busted something with the starter when it came done, nothing broke or snapped or fell off, so i cant think of what could have gone wrong

A chattering starter is usually one that isnt getting enough voltage through it. Since you did a battery relo, double check the ground side of the circuit. If you have a 4 gauge going to the starter terminal, you also need a 4 gauge going to the engine block.

4gauge from the bed 2 the starter then split 2 the fusebox, 4gauge ground from framerail 2 the starter ground, ground from frame rail to the firewall, ground from the framerail to the bed

i took a voltmeter and tested the voltage from the cable from the fusebox to the starter(and the alternator)to the firewall ground i put in and i read 12.5 and the battery itself read 12.8 so a bit of a voltage drop, but not huge

4 ga is not big enough. Go take wiring 101 and try it again. daddio says you are stupid!

4gauge is 2 small, i know, the guys at the installation place told me going to 2gauge isnt a good idea, so they will fix it

and its sure a shame that daddios screen name is being spammed and used by some other kid

ive encountered texas todd, and as far as daddio, hes always been very mature and professional, lately someone has been using his screen name so i know not to let it get to me

a side note, i cut the power cable to the starter so its only about 3foot long and i moved the battery ground so i could test it and see if it was the cable that was too small and gave me to large of a voltage drop, the battery is charging(old and wont hold a charge long)so when i test it, if it works and i need larger cable, will 2gauge gaurantee it will work in the bed of the truck or do i need larger yet? i am getting a new battery as well

ace, if your battery is that old and having trouble taking a charge you mya consider replacing it. that could very well be the root cause of your problems. you may also want to take that starter off and get it tested.

glad you guys can tell thje difference between myself and my "shadow" as i can now call him. i guess he will always be following and never leading.

big difference in personalities, and i took the 12volt battery off my boat which i bought last march, so its fairly new and was charged, hooked it up and still got the click, so its not the cause of the problem, but it wasnt helping either

i think its either 2 large of a voltage drop, or the starter, ill find out within the hour since i moved the battery back to test it

wasnt the cable, still wont crank, the chattering was slower however

its either a bad starter or corroded terminals

im praying its the terminals, i really dont wanna drop the starter, its a pain and the bolts/nuts are so snug and i cant get an impact wrench in there

if an impact can't get in there get a 1/2" drive breaker bar and a long cheater pipe. try putting some PB blaster on those bolts too.

i put my other hand up there to feel around but its not hitting anything

no brackets, no bolts, nothings left, why cant i pull it off? please help me get the starter out by tonight

check the voltage at the starter while cranking, I bet it's LOW. You probably have a bad connection somewhere. If you have any voltage drop you mentioned while not cranking you have a big problem, there should be no voltage drop with no current flowing no matter what wire size you are using.
