I have a question for the dak freaks like me out there, they used roller lifters on the 3.9 from 1988 to 1992,but what kind of lifters were used after that? My 3.9 has had a noise since it was about a year old, its a 1996. It sounds like noisy lifters to me, other 3.9 s that I have heard have it too. Some say they have noisy timing chain thats very common. One person I know says its because they have non adjustable lifters. Whos right? Or both right?

if i'm not mistaken they've used roller lifters ever since they converted the LA motors to Magnums which i think was in '92.

daddio, mine is an 88 and it uses the roller lifters as well, the way I understand it, Dodge started using the rollers in 88 on all the American built engines. As for not being able to adjust them, that goes way back to the 50's I think, they used some that were adjustable during the 50's and 60's for the high performance cars/engines. I would think that they are still using the roller lifters in most all their engines today, even the over head cam engines use a hydrolic slack adjuster.

yeah, i forgot about the "pre-magnum" motors using the roller lifters in preparation for DC to go full magnum.

back in the day, they used solid lifters on the hi-perf/ hi-rpm motors. some form the factory. i know the '69 Chevy 302, some 396's and i'm sure a few others used them. also about the same yr Fords had them too in their hi-perf 302's. you need something like that turning about 8k rpm.

Actually, the Magnum (V6, 318, 360,) engines ARE LA engines, they just have redesigned heads for multi-port FI.

The LA series engines cover the 239, 273, 318, 340, 360 and, the V10 engines. They are based on the 360, just like the 239 V6.
273s through 67 had solid lifters and the 273 4bbl had solids.

Yes, solid lifters are needed at 8,000+ rpm, but I would use roller rather than flat tappets. Much more dependable and the cam profiles can be much more aggressive with rollers.

The only race application for flat tappets I can think of in in NASCAR Sprint Cup, which is required to use flat tappets for some crazy reason, while the Nationwide and truck series engines are allowed rollers.
The work that goes into making those flat tappet cams survive in that application is astronomical.

fotodak, I didn't know the V10 was an LA engine, I thought it was in a class by its self, but I don't know everything that's for sure. I also thought the 273 was only used in the Dart/Valiant auto's, but I was looking at a 65 Dodge van, and the guy said it had a 273 as original equipment.
The slant 6 also used solid lifters up until 82 I think is when they started to use the hydrolic's

225s had solids until 78, fleet engines got hydraulics, then in 81 all 225s were hyds.

273s were also in Belvedere/Satellites in 65, I have a friend who owned a couple.

BTW,the 273s had lots of stuff in them that were different from the new 318, they would rev a lot quicker than the 318 and were actually better suited to HP use.
