Ignition timing is not adjustable. It's set by the computer, based on the crankshaft position sensor that picks up the magnetic field at TDC off a flywheel magnet. However, there is a mod whereby you can change the timing a few degrees - hogging a slot in the mounting holes of the sensor to slide it sideways a few degrees.

Rotating the distributor will change the fuel injector synchronization, which is also a mod, but very sensitive and can cause terrible operation or no-start if you go too far. Again, just a couple of degrees here is plenty (half the width of the rotor tip).

should the distributor be turned clockwise for advancing the timing? it sounds good! also how can i tell if the distributor is already synchronized correctly?

1 1/4 or 32mm socket

TDC compresion stroke marks on damper

rotor near #1 plug wire

looking straight down over rotor button centered
over cyl line on pickup is 0

they run the best around +3
back edge of rotor looking from front with cyl line

so what is should do is rotate my motor to #1 piston TDC. which is located on the damper as zero. and then the distributor rotor is centered over (cyl lin) i am not really sure what that means benard? and then it seems like to advance the injectors sync i have to move the distributor so the back edge of the rotor is? sorry i dont fully understand this i need a little more of a break down to grasp this thanks- i really want to know;)

There is a line scribed on the lip of the distributor housing that you'll see when you take the cap off. With cyl #1 at TDC, the rotor tip should be exactly centered on it (factory spec, but often they are slightly misadjusted). For slightly better performance and gas mileage, rotate the distributor body (loosen the hold-down bolt) and rotate VERY slightly, until when you are facing the vehicle from the front, the trailing side of the rotor (instead of the center of the tip) lines up with the mark on the dist housing. This should be about 3 degrees of rotation. If you go too far, the truck backfires and runs badly. Also, there might be some slop in the timing chain that will affect the accuracy, so adjust it in tiny increments.
