Subject: Possible Clutch Issue?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 3.9L with 5-speed manual trans., around 80,000 miles. Recently (and it's gotten slightly worse), I noticed a high pitched squeeling noise on deceleration around 2,000rpm when the engine is doing the braking. The instant I push in the clutch, the noise stops. Also, if I push the gas to maintain speed (instead of slowing down), the noise also stops.

It's also starting to happen on acceleration in 1st and 2nd around that rpm range. I don't really notice any clutch slipping, but I'm wondering what else stops spinning the instant the clutch petal is pushed in?

It may also help to know that I can rev the engine through that rpm range (around 2k) and the noise will not be present.

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

Matt, it sounds to me like it may be the throw out bearing going bad, its what you actually push againest when you push in on the clutch, well its not really, but its the end result when you push in on the clutch. When the throw out bearing goes bad they do tend to make noise, the only thing is, I don't see where letting off the gas would make it squeel. My best guess would be the throw out bearing.
I'm sure someone else may have other opinions though.
Good Luck

Possible vacuum leak ? Maybe under dash ?
If same as older-uses vacuum for heater/ac control.

Also , what about idler pulley, or alternator
or serpentine belt ?

I'm not sure about the vaccum leak...it doesn't sound like air, more of a screeching/scraping noise.

I'm fairly positive it's not the belt either, because when in neutral or when the clutch is pushed in, I can rev the engine and there is no noise. The noise only happens when in gear and moving.

The wierd thing is that it stops when I'm driving at a constant speed (as opposed to engine breaking decel or acceleration) or when I push the clutch in.

Thanks for the ideas! More are welcome!
