Subject: whats my differential ratio

Message:
DOes anyone know how I can find out what my differential ratio is? Does anyone know how the MPGs would improve with a lower ratio gear set? Not sure if its worth it but thought I'd ask.

Thanks

Look at the underside of the hood, on the right side as you are facing the radiator. There should be a sticker showing the drivetrain installed.

or check the sticker on the inside of the glovebox lid or there should be a metal tag on the rear diff. you probably have 3.55:1.

by lower do you mean numerically? i.e 3.21:1

Thanks...the sticker says 3.5. What if I go to 3.21, what kinda of fuel savings would I expect? Has anyone done this?

depending on what running gear your truck has it coulld make it worse. my bro-in-law has an '02 CC 4x2 auto w/ 3.21 gears and i have an '00 QC 4x2 5spd w/3.55 gears and i get about 2-3 mpg more than he does.

3.21's are not good gears to switch to. if you have 3.55's then your not doing bad. The reason I think this is, your gonna get good highway mileage and still have some low speed power. if you do alot of stoplight driving i would switch to 4.11:1's... your engine wouldn't have to work as hard to get up to speed, and your mileage would improve, but if your running stock tires your highway mileage would degrade.

I have seen many get better mileage with the 3.91
the motor does not have to work as hard to get
to speed and maintain the speed

It would also depend on how you drive the truck
all high way
all city and what speed you cruse at around here
I always set my cruse on 60 limit 55 tickets are
at 62 and above around here now when I cruse to
like wausa or milwaukee, chicago than 75mph is
what I am crusing at

pick the best gears for the aplication

many of the pre mag trucks did run the 3.21

thanks for the responses. I ran some rough numbers and agree that 1-2 MPG can be gained under highway conditions. I don't think a new rear end is a good investment for me. I'll drive my 92 dakota another year maybe two then let my son drive/wreck it. I'm not going to spend money that may take a year to get the payback. I know.... When gas hits $4 and I'm still driving the dakota, I'll wish I'd done it!!!

stevedak, I have an 88 and I rebuilt the engine and I am geting around town 16-17 mpg, but on the highway I am, getting over 20, over all I am getting 18- 20 mpg. If I do more town than highway, I get 18, if I wind up doing more highway then I get 20plus, the best I have gotten so far on highway is 24.3.
Good Luck
