1997 3.9V6 5 speed 4x4 86,000Miles
I have yet another problem with this thing and im hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
When i let it sit over night or when the engine is perfectly cold ill go to fire it up and it will run kinda rough not too bad as ive never had a good idle with the 3.9. But if i start to drive when the engine is still cold the thing will hasitate and back fire pretty much fall flat on its face between off idle and 2100RPM
And i mean bad but it will hesitate backfire then catch. Then soon as i shift to the next gear it will do the same. It never used to do this 2 weeks ago but seems to be getting worse. And i dont like to rev it high to 3200RPM to shift on a cold engine. Once it warms up its fine runs at 1800RPM in 5th on the highway fine.
But this is puzzling ive done nothing to the engine that would cause this. Im going to swap out the autolites plugs for a new set and check the wires etc but still have no clue. Im wondering if it could have a weak plug? any ideas?
Thank you

You have a problem with the EGR system. I am not familiar with this year model so someone else will have to guide you from here.

no EGR on a '97. have you checked for any codes? read the old plugs when you change them. it could be the engine temp sensor. could be a vacuum leak on the intake manifold.

Possibly be a bad engine temp sensor-NOT the one for the temp gague. This one is in the front of the intake also, but easy to get to if you remove a small AC bracket. It's probably hidden by part of the wire harness.
It tells the ECM the engine temp and the ECM makes the proer adjustments. If this thing tells the ECM the engine is warm it will lean the a/f mixture and you get the symptoms described.

Ya sorry should have said no codes and i looked at all the plugs they are all light tan so its getting the right fuel mix most of the time, But for ill check that engine temp sensor see if its in spec also look for vacume leaks but it idles at 600RPM when warm so i dont think theres any vacum leaks
thanks guys
