theres a way to check the trouble codes with out the code reader, you turn the key to on, then off, then on, then off, then on and leave it, and its supposed 2 give u a number in the odometer and thats the error code

nothing happens when i do that, any other ways to get it to show up? i dont wanna drive to an autostore where they will do it, i wanna learn how to do it this way

help?

Yes, turn the ignition on/off 3 times quickly and leave it in the on position. Then watch the "check engine" light to blink....they are 2 digit codes such as 2 blinks then 2 blinks is code 22 (coolant temp sensor). When it gets to 55....self diagnostics are finished.

the key trick works on your '01 for sure. you must have done something wrong. turn the key on/off/on/off/on in 10 seconds or less. the codes will display in the odometer as PXXXX then display Pdone when its finished or no codes stored.

"and i just turn the key so the lights come on right, i dont turn the engine on, then off, then on...etc correct?"

correct, turn the key on until all the warning lights come on. i use it all the time on my '00.

i tried that, and waited for a few sec, might have only been 8 or 9 sec with my luck hah

but i kno what the problem is, i just want to learn how to read the codes, i started my truck with the ait sensor unplugged accidentally, caught it right away but still, wanna learn how to read the codes

also read that sometimes for whatever reason, it works for some people with doing the cycle 10times instead of 3, either way ima tinker with it and try it til i get it, its something handy to learn how to do

On the early Dak's, the check engine light would flash, on the 92's I think they started using the odometer, like daddio said, it should show a "P" then a number, when done, or if no codes, Pdone.

Nope, the 92s still use the check engine light.

The procedure should work as described.

each "blink" represents a number
example 2 blinks = #2
4 blinks = #4

the codes are then 2 digits each

example 1 blink - 2 blinks = code 12
5 blinks - 5 blinks = code 55
