1994 Dodge Dakota, 3.9 - Truck would run great for 2 days, next day wouldn't start. Would crank over, but wouldn't fire. Seemed like it wasn't getting fuel. Replaced fuel pump, plugs, dist. cap & wires. Now it will start, but the pump shuts off after 2 1/2 minutes or so each time. Replaced auto shut down & pump relays, checked the wiring under the power box. Seems to be running very rich also. We did buy another computer, but the one they sold us was for a V8, it ran really bad with that one in. Idiots. Put the old computer back in last night, it idled perfectly and ran for a long time. Kid went out and about in it and had to get a tow truck to bring it home. It kept stalling and finally wouldn't start again. We are now testing the crank sensor. We've read through some of the posts which helped us alot and we have tried almost everything. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried checking the codes? It could be a bunch of things, but if you have any codes that could narrow it down some what. I'm thinking it COULD be the oil sending unit, it will stop the fuel pump if it doesn't detect any oil pressure. I would check the plug for the oil sending unit and be sure its clean, and plug it back in and see what happens. It may show good oil pressure on the gauge but still shut off the fuel pump.
Good Luck

After we put the old computer back in, the codes all checked ok. It did start for the tow truck driver last night. Fired right up this morning, ran for a bit and shut off. Broke the oil sending unit getting to the crank sensor, bought a new one. Putting it back together now. Son also said when he brakes, the oil pressure gauge goes low and then back up when he gives it gas. So we'll see.
P.S. This forum is great!!! Alot of useful information. Thank you !!!!

Put the new oil unit in and put everything back together, now it won't start at all. The fuel pump is not turning on. 2 weeks trying to fix this thing, getting very frustrating.

I always do the cheapest thing first. Have you replaced the fuel filter? It may be clogging after pressure builds up. After it sits a while, the debris loosens and allows fuel to flow. Then the truck will run for a bit.

Two things
One - you say you checked that splice under the "power box " ?
May be best to redo that splice of 3 or 4 wires
just to make sure..
Second - possible coil is 'shorting' out
when warmed up . Check for spark..
You can check for 'fuel pressure' by checking the
'release valve' back end of fuel rail .
If it spurts = then yes , you have pressure and fuel pump is ok.

The fuel filter is in the tank on the pump, so yes it is new. Redid the splice, but going to re-check it because the pump doesn't come on when I jumper it. Spark is fine when warm. Something is making the pump shut off, or it was when it came on. Plenty of fuel pressure when pump is on. Picked up another computer, hopefully, this will be the end of it. Again, thank you all for your tips and tricks, it has helped. Will post the outcome.

Well, new, used computer in. Runs like a top thus far. Keeping our fingers crossed. I hope this thread helps someone out there. We've spent alot a time and money replacing things, so my suggestion is: if the fuel pump keeps shutting off, go for the computer, all the other fixes didn't work. But once again, thank you to all for your input. It was greatly appreciated.
