What is the difference in the 3.7 compared to the old 3.9? Is it a different block al together and why after all these years did they change? What about mileage/performance? Also, what year did they do they change?

2 totally different engines. 3.7 is a SOHC design and the 3.9 is an OHV design. nothing interchanges. the 3.7 came out in the Dak in '04 to replace the 3.9. the 3.7 had 210hp but about the same torque as the 3.9. was also supposed to be more fuel efficient but i haven't seen proof of that.

if you're looking to replace a 3.9, you'll be better off swapping in a Magnum 5.2 or 5.9 because virtually every thing will bolt up to either.

in closing, if you want efficiency/ great mileage, get a 4 banger. if you want power swap in the 5.2 or 5.9.

The 3.9 is derived from the 5.2/5.9 V8s. The 3.7 is derived from the 4.7 V8. The 3.7/4.7 use overhead cams, and distributor-less ignition systems among other things.

My ex had a full size 2003 Quad cab RAM with a 3.7/5spd and gets the same mileage I do with a 3.9/AT in my 2001 CC Dakota.

On the other hand, there's VERY little in the way of aftermarket support for the 3.7. SOme of the stuff for the 4.7 will interchange (CAI for example), but not much.

as soon as dalmer went with chrysler they
started using the 3.7 and 4.7

Not a bad little motor just revs higher to make
the power

They are doing throttle bodies for the 3.7 hughes
says around a 15hp gain

The big problem with these motors is the torque
managment in the computer really dogs them out

My nephew has a 06 4.7 and its a dog compaired
to his 97 318 both 4x4's he don't like it

When Daimler bought Chrysler, it was still a little while before the 3.7 was spun off from the 4.7 for the Dakotas. 4.7 is fairly comparable to 5.2. The '06 model is a heavier truck.

The 4.7 actually came out before the merger. "Daimler" is right about the '06 being a heavier truck. The 4.7 gives up a little bit of low end torque to the 5.2, but makes more power on the big end when the 5.2 numbers are starting to drop off. Most of the perceived difference should be due to the weight difference - this isn't comparing apples to apples. A better comparison would be comparing the '97 5.2 to a 4.7 in the same generation truck - like my '00.
