'00 QC 4x2 3.9 5spd, 3.55:1 gears, 235/75/15 tires, commute mileage @ avg. 50mph= 20mpg.

in town 18mpg, hwy 23 @65mph. does start to plummet after 70mph. best hwy miles of 24mpg.

my truck is mostly stock except, CPS mod, Removed clutch fan, and removed that stupid air horn from the airbox.

Ben iam in your league 13.2-13.7 with 02'CC approx 78,000 miles approaching 3.55 gears 2 wheel drive and mostly driving in city and considering because of MI winters and might have a lazy MAP sensor waiting for warmer weather to see if mileage comes up if not will futher my finds like i posted earlier this month. Truck is good running well maintained for the 6 yrs.

Mine is an 01 Quad w/3.9 Auto. When I bought it (used with 60k) it was getting around 14 in town and almost 17 hwy. I could tell it was running kind of doggy so did the usual tune up items....plugs, wires, fuel filter, K&N air filter. This helped, truck ran better but still not right. My LFT was burried in high negative. Determined that my intake pan was leaking, replaced with Hughes plate and felt confident negative fuel would come up. NOPE. Truck ran a little better but milage was still the same and fuel trim still negative. Drove for quite a while trying to figure why the fuel was so negative. Finally one day had some spare shop time and decided to check compression. Found 2 cylinders with 50 pounds less compression than the others. Some reaserch showed some head casting problems with some 3.9 valve seats receeding. Replace heads with NEW castings, fuel trim straightend out, milage now about 16.5 in town and 18 hwy and truck runs best it ever has. I have also done the CPS mod too.

Sludge is from moisture entering crankcase from various items. And your IAC motor located back of throttle body two screws TORX-25 to remove it with your mileage if decide to do replace the O'ring in it but would do a whole throttle body itself if you do use good throttle body cleaner and use compressed air to blow out left over spray might choke out if you dont, you can leave your TPS sensor on when doing this just dont drop it either aluminum throttle body cast.

Im having mileage problems too. its winter and im in MI, thats not helping at all. think it could be a lazy map like pete said. I'm gonna do an engine flush next oil change and get any sludge that might be in there.

Thanks pete for the info in the IAC motor o-ring, and throttle body cleaning. I'm sure it can use it. when it's warmer I'll tackle all that, can't be too expensive opposed to buying sensors..

sludge can drop mileage drastically. I had a lot in my old 95 3.9 4x4 and was getting < 14mpg, flushed it and restored it back to 16-17.

thanks for the info guys its very useful. the only proble is that i havent worked on my truck or any for that matter and i have no idea about the throttle body(where it is or looks like) or the timing chain or how to replace them. i cant do anything to extensive cause my dad will crap a horse if i mess up the engine since technically its still his. if i play my cards right ill get it for dirt cheap in a few years but right now im looking for an easy thing i can do to help the mileage. the tb and timing chain all sound complicated any tips or suggestions? im taking my truck in for an oil change soon and will have jiffy lube take care of the sludge. how much better is synthetic over conventional cause my dad has always put in conventional cause its cheaper?

Hey Ben, to clean the throttle body is pretty easy, remove the air cleaner, its on top of the throttle body. then use some carb. cleaner, or brake parts cleaner and spray it down, if you remove the "Idle Air Control" valve you can spray it down with the cleaner and the hole where it came from, if you don't think you can do it, then just spray it down as best you can, also open the throttle and spray inside the body as well, it may not do a lot of good, but it may give you an idea of what to do if you have someone help you. (assuming you know someone who is good with cars)
Good Luck
