I tried my email address for you, but I guess it's old. Would you might weighing in on a trans problem I'm having? I'll post it here, and ask the V6 guys not to get too upset with me :-) I know you contribute a lot to this v6 forum, and I'm hoping to catch you.

Here's the problem...

Larry -

I was hoping that you could help me to understand what's wrong with my newly rebuilt trans :-( This is a copy of a post that I am going to make on the Dodge site. Maybe you can take a sec to give me your opinion? Thanks!!!!

The truck: 99 Dak 5.2 4x4 CC - 44re trans. I had a rebuild done about 2 months ago on the trans - slipping badly and check engine light on. 127,000mi. Rebuild with new torque converter and electronics.

I got the truck back and took my time to really dial in the TV cable adjust properly, in case it was somehow related. It doesn't seem to be.

It's cold in NJ, and on the first startup I back out of the driveway and then put it into drive. There's a delay before it engages first. The first couple times I'd start to go and then it would find first. Thank God I'm not the type to shift and stomp!

The other problem is that I get a very slight slip between shifting from 2nd to 3rd under mid throttle shifts. This was one of the early signs of my trans going south before the rebuild (though worse back then). When she shifts at about 3200rpm, I get a couple hundred RPM slip in between catching 3rd.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance,
Wally
P.S. One thing that I forgot to mention! He used Dexron III instead of ATF+3, and I have not changed it out yet.

wally, you should have put that PS first. flush the Dex outta there and fill it with the ATF+4. hope that fixes it but i have my doubts. because someone that rebuilds a DC auto trans and doesn't know enough to put ATF+4 in it makes me doubtful.

I'm sure that changing the fluid to +3 or +4 would be proper, but I can't see it being the cause of my trouble. If it was, I'd wager that it would happen all the time and worse at WOT. It only happens at 2-3 shift, worst when cold, and not at all on WOT shifts.

I'm not arguing, because you may be right... but it seems like something more to me.

ok, what about a poor band adjustment? I was reading a how-to on adjusting the bands and it said that they can be out of adjustment and make what feels like a 2-3 slip. ???

well, judging by what your "trans" guy did not do properly previously, by using the wrong fluid to begin with, it is possible that he did not correctly adjust the bands. but you still need to get that DexIII out of there and put ATF+4 in it.

or you can keep driving it as is and use your repair shops warranty when the trans takes a dump again.

I got some info from a different trans guy on another site and he says the fluid won't cause this, but a loss of pressure internally or low level. The level isn't low.

UGH!

I'll be dropping it off on Saturday :-(

Trans fluid is a big facter with the o/d trans in
these trucks

dextron is a no no if its in there get it out
+3, +4
Amsoil
Redline

The problem you are discribing has a few things
that can cause that

1 even the new sensors can be bad seen that many
times

valve body leak 35 inch pounds torque on all
body screws if 1 is over tightened or under
it will warp and leak very criticle

2 leaky TV valve and sleave

3 buzing presure valve

these should both have been replaced during
rebuild if not the guy is not familiure with
the mopar transmissions and this was probably
the cause of the failure in the first place

transmissionpartsusa.com

sonax redesigned valves in stock ready to ship
around $80 for both
