A couple of months ago my '99 4x4 Dakota developed a tapping noise in the transmission which turned out to be a cracked flexplate. I took it to a transmission shop and they replaced it for a pretty good price ($440).

Now only a few hundred miles later the flexplate has broken off again - this time doing it properly and leaving me stranded on the interstate. The truck is back at the transmission shop.

Any ideas what would cause it to chew through one so quick. The mechanic said it looked like what was left of the flexplate was still bolted up ok.

Thanks for your help.

Derek

40 plus years owning a shop and I never seen a broken flex plate. bad ring gear yes. Look at the pieces to see if there is any bluing (over heated)going on.Clutch plates can over heat and break the center out. No idea how a flex plate could get that hot but I can't think of another reason to crack other then being defective or improperly installed.

I have heard of Merceds having that problem, it was due to the transmission housing being warped and held the trans at a slight angle to the engine. It doesn't take much to cause the flex plate to break either.
Good Luck

In my 30 plus years I have only seen 1 brake and
that was a jeep with the asian 500 trans

We replaced it and no probs we never did figure
out why it broke but this is a guy who twisted
a drive shaft right off 1 day

I towed this jeep in one day and the front axle
locked up pulled the cover and muddy water ran out
LOL I asked him if he ever checked the fluid he
said no LOL

I than found out he was doing reverse drops a few
weeks later I towed ot in was laying in middle of
road upside down LOL

he was hard on this jeep to say the least I also
pulled this guy out of the swaps back by me a
dozen times or more LOL
