Subject: cylinder 5 misfire
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 dakota 3.9 and I tried getting it to pass emissions not long ago. They told me that cylinder 5 is misfiring. I replaced the dist. cap, rotor button, plugs, plug wires, fuel injectors, and o2 sensors. Now they still say it's misfiring and I have taken it to three mechanics and no one seems to know why. Does anyone have a solution?

Do a compression test yet?
Both wet and dry test it and also a leak down test.

Yeah...they did the compression and leak down tests. Nothing. They say I have great compression.

- Did you check coil?
- What about vaccuum?
- spark plug gapped correctly?
- spark plug damaged?
- plug wires in correct firing order? should be since only 1 cylinder misfiring.
- cylinder 5 plug wire not arcing against anything is it?
- distributer pick up sensor been inspected? changed?

check the routing of your heater hoses might have one of them resting top of probaly #5 wire which from the heater hose getting hot to cold creating moisture, condensation building up check thatnotice this with my 02' don't know 98' have the same heater hose routing against the firewall 02's are routed this way and discovered this beginning to be an issue for my truck if your lucky the factory clipholds the hose up and away from the distributor cap to prevent this

I always find it amazing just how predictable these issues are.

I have a 98 3.9 with the same issue.

It seems trucks of the same age have the same problems at the same time enough to be uncanny.

like last winter everyone was having issues with heater cores, this year not so much.

As for a fix, I don't know yet, I don't like that you've replaced everything and not found the problem.

I've done cap and rotor plugs and wires so far, injectors are next.

check the belly pan gasket. check inside the manifold looking through the TB into the manifold and see if you notice oil puddling down there.

Other things could cause this:
Burned and leaking valve,Clogged fuel Injector,Contaminated Fuel,Cracked engine block or cylinder head,Defective Crankshaft Position sensor,Defective fuel pressure regulator(stuck open or closed, Disconnected fuel injector,EGR valve stuck open,Incorrect input to PCM from defective Coolant sensor,Incorrect input from defective MAP sensor,Incorrect valve clearances,Timing chain (if been replaced) incorrectly installed,Insuffiecent voltage to fuel pump,Leaking head gasket,Leaking fuel injector,Loose spark plug,Open or short in fuel injector or harness, plugged fuel filter, Restricted EGR valve passage,Restricted exhaust pipe, catalyst or muffler,Sticking valve,Worn camshaft lobes, worn out fuel pump, worn piston rings. Sounds like possibilties but may have one these never think but would go through it carefully

Good chance you have an intake manifold leak. I would concentrate on anything that can point you specifically to that cylinder as that is the most likely scenario.

IF you have a shop manual ( haynes, etc ), look in the front section of it for the vacuum test procedures. A vacuum gauge will be able to tell you quite a bit about the general mechanical condition of your motor while it is running. I'd start with that and go from there.

Generally speaking though, if you are getting good compression, then it's a good chance that that cylinder is just getting too much air and running lean causing the misfire condition.

The compression and leak down test would have shown something if it was a Burned or leaking valve.

I have the same problem on my 98!! except its my #2 cylinder. i havnt had the funds to get my cap/rotor and wires changed. I actually need a new o2 sensor. my truck has a weird harness or something and all the o2 sensors for the rear will not fit my truck because the harness is the same gender as the o2 sensor. ever hear of that?

boomer, some of the California trucks did have different senors/pigtails. Could be you have a truck that was intended for cal.
Just a guess on my part though. I have heard from others here that some of the Cal. trucks were a little different.
Good Luck

dakota49, i thought about that too but i havnt been informed by anyone that the pigtails could be different on a california truck. thanks for the info. i dont know if i can just get a whole new harness for the sensor and replace the whole thing or what. i really don't want to cut into the trucks harness. i could use an old o2 sensor and use the wiring from that but the one i got is from a universal and thats what my main problem is right now.

If all else fails, you might try checking for a pulse at injector #5. They make a tool for this, it's a little light bulb that flashes... you disconnect the injector and plug the flasher in. Or you can even use a multimeter to watch for voltage spikes.

harbor freight sales those in-line spark testers. They have 2 models, one with straight boot and one with 45 boot. I have both. They do come in handy sometimes.

plug them inline between the spark plug wire and spark plug.

They're around $4 each I think.
