Subject: 1.7 RR's at 130k?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just got a nice set of Harland Sharps 1.7 RR's (non-adjustable types) for Christmas -- and I can't wait to put them in my '98 3.9!

My odometer is creeping past 130,000 miles, and I want to make sure that this mod will be "safe" for my daily driver. The engine runs great... and I'll probably compression test it before I sink my time (and these expensive parts) into it.

But assuming everything else appears to be fine, should I replace the original stock valve springs when I do the rockers? If so, should I replace with new oem springs, or are there aftermarket springs that are better for the 1.7 ratio with stock cam? (I don't race, and the engine will never see over 4500 RPM -- while I own it, that is.) If you know the part numbers or specs for the valve springs I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Sure why not?
Just make sure you trq. them down properly and give the lifters time to bleed down.
The 3.9 is a long living motor if taken care of properly. With that said if you've taken good care of yours with regular maintenance your 130,000 is not really a whole lot.

Sounds like I can get away with stock valve springs. I might try to replace them when I can afford it...

From what I've gathered by reading forums and the Mopar catalog, I'll need Mopar Performance parts:

#P5249464 x12 springs (0.400-0.525 lift)
#P4452032 x12 retainers
#P4529218 x2 keepers (enough for 8cyl)

And all of that will run me at least $250, which seems like a whole lot for valve springs on an otherwise-stock V6. But worth it for not having to pull the heads.

When I have the valve springs out, should I replace the valve seals? I don't have any oil consumption but it would be easy to do it... Is this generally the correct thing to do?

Larry, Curly, thanks for the feedback. But where's Moe?

Seriously, though, you are a great help. Also, Harland Sharps has great product support. Now all I need is some great weather. Thanks again!

The other good thing with the Harlands is you dont have to mod. the valve covers.

Mike98, I installed the HS 1.7s in mine some time back and they were a great mod. The one thing that I really wish that I had done at the time was to replace the wimpy stock pushrods. I think ProblemChild DID replace his, and I recall another person reporting that he'd found one of his bent (or was it split?) when he was installing his 1.7s. Anyway, I still worry about mine and the cost of replacing those things is just too little for you not to consider doing.
