For some reason when it is cold outside, the mechanical fan runs almost constantly. I guess the clutch is staying engaged. Because of this my engine temp rarely reaches operating temp. When it is warm outside the fan hardly ever runs. Sounds like to me the clutch is messed up. Anyone else ever experience this?

Yeah, my 99' V8 is doing the same thing. But I wasn't sure if this was normal for a clutch operated fan.
I'm not sure about in the summer, but right now it won't stop turning. Also my temp gauge won't move past a quarter of the way up. And I'm freezing my a$$ off(I live in Manitoba,Canada and they say it's going to be the coldest winter in 15 years). On the V8 forum they said to try back flushing the heater core. I'm going to try that, but maybe I should look into the fan clutch also, especially if it is not suppose to be on all the time.
Please let me know what you find out, and I will keep you informed also.

I believe its an issue with the fan clutch. It seems to be working opposite. It shouldn't run hardly at all in the winter and more in the summer.

remove them
and replace with an electric
less rotating mass
it can only help to improve MPG's and performance

wkudak, if your truck is an '00 or later you can just remove that clutch fan for the winter and run with the aux electric fan. i've done that on my '00 for the last 3 yrs with no problems at all. even in the middle of the hot south LA summers.

daddio, it is a 2000 and it does have the aux electric fan. How do you get it to cycle on and off? I thought it only worked if the AC was running?

the fan comes on with demand for ac and engine temp above 130 or when engine temp reaches 210 with or without ac.
down here my ac runs year 'round. rememeber your ac comp runs on every setting but floor and vent.
if you wanted i'm sure you could put a manual switch. i know some have put in an adjustable thermo switch to switch the fan on at a temp lower than 210. IMO 210 won't hurt it. and when the fan does come on at 210 it doesn't take long to cool down. at least mine doesn't.

Thanks daddio. Not sure if the aux fan can keep it cool in a humid KY summer. I'll give it a shot, though.

hell, if mine can keep my truck cool in a humid south lousisiana summer you should have no trouble. only diff maybe is my truck is a 5spd so i don't have a slush box adding heat to my radiator.

Mine is an 88, and I removed the fan altogether, it does run just a little bit hotter in hot weather, but since it dropped to the 50's and lower I haven't had any problems at all, it still seems to take a long time to get warmed up though. About 1 1/2- 2 miles before it starts putting out warm air. After that its fine.
