Guess what guy's I lost power again. I have my new meter and just in time. The old analog meter had a bad connection in the positive plug in, it worked 90% of the time and didn't every once in awhile. You guessed it I don't know what is what. I had notes for every check I made and there is a lot of writing. Anyway it explains some of the odd readings I had or didn't have. We definitely had power to fuel pump, coil, Computer and injectors. One question I have is is there power going straight to the computer? In my Haynes 1987-1996 I find a rd/wht wire that says Battery, but it is a 14 gauge wire. It was hot at one time 12+ volts and now it's not, but it is a good wire back to its origination or destination, (I am confused as to which) at the PDC. Anyway I can't find anything that seems to be like a power cord to the computer except a couple of connections one is a 5 volt feed and the other is an 8 volt feed. This makes me assume that somewhere there is a wire feeding 12 volts into the computer but that small wire doesn't seem right. I wish there was someone here in the bafons that was smart enough to know this stuff. We have a Ford dealer and a Chevy dealer and they both are like Red Riding Hoods wolf in Grandmas bed, waiting to eat whoever comes in. They trap travelers and little old ladies and poor folks with used cars from hurricane Katrina. Sorry but it's true. I am confused as to the direction of flow of things. It seems everthing should be powered by battery or charging system, but the manuals wiring diagram is not for my truck on the charging system. It has fusible links and my truck doesn't, also the wires are not the same color or even the same destination. It has to be a short or bad connection, I guess I am going to have to just find better diagrams and study how the comp works. If something hits any of you feel free to tell me. Thanks, TobyWD40 This site is awesome as my son says!

I failed to say 1992 3.9 MPI 2wd auto. I just died while driving one day. Replaced Cam. Pos. Sen., Crank Pos. Sen., Dist. Cap, Rotor, Plug wires, Coil., Checked Time chain. I think I have answered part of my own question. Power feeds into the power distribution center from two heavy black cables, then goes too individual relays and fuses, then to comp. and other components or sensors, I think. Does anyone know or have a diagram of the Power Distribution Center and what feeds in and then out. I have a pretty good picture of the computer and wires in and out but not a good diagram of PDC on one page. Thanks TobyWD40

Thanks OBIO3, I'm sorry to be so dumb but what book do I need or titles that would help. I have Haynes Dakota pickups 87-96 2wd-4wd and they cover so many models you can't get much about one year. I'm trying to learn and so far everyone on here has had great input and I have read most posts up to page 60 on V6's. I know a lot more than before but some clear diagrams of the wiring for a 92 3.9 specifically would be nice. Library had nothing , (tiny town), dealership 80 miles away and 50 miles away said hard to go back that old, juat bring it in. It gave no codes so they will probably do the same as me from what everyone on here has suggested. I think there is more knowledge on here than any dealership I've ever been to. They charged my dad $380.00 for the oxy sensor change in 1998. Someone else finally fixed the truck. I found the receipt in the glove box. Sorry to seem gripey, Thanks for the suggestion, Toby

Hey Toby, there should be a hot wire going to the computer all the time, at least one, so the computer won't forget everything it has stored in memory. And there should be at least one wire that only has .5 volts, but like you, I get confused by the wire diagrams as well.
I'll study mine and see if I can be of more help.
Good Luck

Toby!!! you still got problems???

the red/white wire that leaves the power dist box is hot all the time and goes to the pcm. That red/white wire has a fuse in the power dist box, check your fuses. Before the red/white wire gets to the pcm it goes thru a splice which is within 1 foot of the power dist box. you should check it and two or three or four other splices (green/yellow, dark blue).

I finally found my problem for sure this time and by accident. it turns out the center bolt that secures the pcm connector to the pcm had broken. the connector made intermittent contact. I had to expoxy the bolt back in, then I was able to tighten the bolt and the connector like normal.
