Subject: Serpentine Belt Tensioner
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a major squeal/grinding coming from my truck I think its time for a tensioner and new belt. The tensioner springs back though? But when pulling on the belt from the drivers side it seems awfull loose? I can get the nutt off the pully on the tensioner no problem. Whats after that? My haynes book is kinda vague on the subject.

Thank you

To ge tthe tentioner off take a good look a the motor. Since I you didn't say the year of the truck I will base this off of the 3.9 in my 2000. You are going to have to unscrew the coil from the back of the tenioner. Beyond that I think there are 2 other bolts, one was a bit of a pain because it was under the tentioner assembly. Like all auto part replacement, it is pretty stright foward. Hope it helped.

If your tensioner is loacted under the coil on the passengers side. save your self the trouble of taking the whole bracket off and with a box wrench just unbolt the the single nut that holds the tensioner to the bracket just remember to line up the key in the new tensioner when you tighten the new one saves alot of hassle

anyone know just how much play in the belt is normal? my belt is only 4-5 months old but it seems i can push down on the belt and get about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch push. when i'm pushing down the tensioner also moves a little bit. the harder you push the more the tensioner moves, obviously! i don't have any belt squeel, maybe a little chirping in the morning for a minute or two till she warms up!

All depends on where you are pushing on the belt as to deflection, but it really doesn't matter. The tensioner has a mark on it that will tell you if the belt is too loose. If the marks line up, you have a stretched belt. The tensioner is designed to move some when the load on the belt changes...this is normal.

The automatic belt tensioner is supposed to give a little. My tensioner started whining at 45K miles and within a week the tensioner broke..could have been from the accident 4 years before, although apparently it's common due to the fact that the stock tensioner is open from the back, exposing the spring, allowing dirt and rust to accumulate and ruin it, blah blah..

It's 2 screws from the side of the coil, then there's a bolt behind that, and it comes off.

There is 1 15mm bolt holding the whole works on

Checker Auto, Parts America the good year brand
new pully bearing and tensioner unit for under
$50

Stay away from the dayco brand

Just bolt it on you can also buy just the pully
and bearing but for the price replace the works
and not worrie for another 100,000 miles

There is also another idler located almost center
of motor that goes bad check this pully also

The tensioners seam to go around 100,000 miles the
other idler seams to last forever
