Subject: Stalls, sputters,loads up
IP: Logged

Message:
My 95 with a 3.9 will load up bad. I can hold it to the floor and it will eventually clear out and run fine. One of these times its not going to clear out and I'm gonna be hosed! I put a new IAC motor on it,but, still the same old problem. Doesnt matter if its cold or warmed up. Any one have any clue to whats going on with this thing?

have you checked for any stored codes? could be the O2 sensor. sounds like it's running over rich.

Yeah, the only code that amounts to anything is "Throttle possition sensor isnt synched to MAP" wich I didnt have untill I changed the MAP. I had the problem before I changed the MAP and the IAC motor. Getting tired of throwing parts at this thing!

i guess it's safe to say that you reset the PCM when you changed the MAP? you can check that TPS with a DVOM. just don't know if the procedure/values are the same for your OBDI as my '00 OBDII.

Could it be a temp sensor problem?

shadetree, you are right, it could be a temp senor, the problem though if it was in that bad of shape it would most likely throw a code, sounds to me like its way off, but stranger things have happened.
I think its one of those times where it may take some time to get everything checked out. This is where a test meter pays for its self. I had a very good one from Radio Shack and I used it for close to 15 years before it decided to lie about what I was checking. Bought another new one and it told on my old one. (about the lieing)
Good Luck

No need to throw parts at it. Just use the book and an OHM meter. Check suspect items first. Have the parts store put an OBD1 on it. sometimes this will show codes better then others.

...I get these problems only on cold start, after it sits all night. (rough idle, wants to stall out, spits, sputters etc.) But, after it warms up for about 5 to 10 minutes it idles fine and problem goes away for the rest of the day. 80,000 miles (2002 Dakota 6 cyl., 3.9L). Wires, plugs, cap, rotar and coil have all been replaced. Dealer had it for 2 days and couldn't figure out problem either. Had full diagnostics done on it. HELP...

Nancy, a weak battery can cause that problem. your local Autozone should be able to test your battery for free. especially if it's the original battery.

I would start by getting the battery load tested

I will get the battery tested 2day for sure. Although I would hope the dealer would have done that simple test first. If the battery passes the load test, what then?

What about a stuck or malfuntioning injector or mabye a bad fuel pressure regulator. Also check the compression while cold and after its warmed up. It should not be less than 100psi and not have more than 40psi variance between the cylinders.

could be the engine temp sensor since it only does this until it warms up. but i hate to see you throw money at it. has anyone checked for codes.

this is done easily on your truck. simply turn the key on/off/on/off/on(by on i mean run position, not start) and the codes will display in the odometer. something like this P1492. when it's done it will display Pdone.

Nancy, i hope they tested the battery properly. i've had those A/Z and O'reilly's guys tell me something was good when it was not and vice versa.

You might try cleaning the Idle Air Control Motor. If you take off the air cleaner, its on the back side of the throttle body. Take it out and clean it and the hole in throttle body where it "lives". I think my problem ended up being water in the tank, DOOHHH!It had set for about 2 months.

Just wondering if you've ever got the problem resolved? I've got the same problem with the idling and sputtering when warming up and haven't got it figured out yet? 99 v6 dak here.
