Hi All i have a 92 dak 3.9 auto,I Went to leave for work no start just a click noise. i have been having a problem with it starting in park lately, but it always would start in neutral today it would not start in either P OR neutral. After wiggling the shift lever for some time in the neutral area of the shifter it started.but the problem is still occuring.I checked the shift linkage to the tranny and found some play in the shift rod bushing.should replacing the bushing and readjusting the shift linkage solve the problem? Anything else i should check? Thanks

Well I'm not an expert by any means with transmissions, but it may just be a neutral safety switch issue. You might be able to find out where this switch is, pull it, and make sure that its in good working order.

My policy is start with the cheap and easy stuff.

My $.02.

I have had this problem as well. Just out of no where once it wouldn't start in Park. I have to hold the shifter up sometimes to get it to start, but other times, I have to put it in neutral to start it. So, I am interested in what you find out since my '93 seems to be on the same track.

if it will start in any drive gear
then it is the safety switch

if holding up on the shift allows you to start the truck then the problem is within the shifter

Yeah, after thinking about it some more, I agree with Boost. If you can "hold" it up in park to start it, it's probably a shift linkage issue.

Good luck,

Jay

Rocco, I just looked it up in my manual, and it says to make sure the linkage is ajusted properly, so as you suppect, it could be the wore bushing causing the problem. The Neutral Safty Switch is located in the lower left front edge of the trans case. You could check to see that it is plugged in all the way as well.
Good Luck

92 Dakotas have a safety recall on the shift linkage. See your dealer to find if it's been done. The park pawl in the tranny can let go. This may be related.

Replace the safty switch there is a detent linkage
that only turns the switch on in N or P

I would first check the connections on the switch

The detent does not ware out or come lose it cant
the way its designed

The problem is that your truck won't start.
The solution is to replace the neutral safety switch.

Well i dont have a dakota, but i have a 94 dodge
ram automatic with a 5.2 v8. And ive been having
a similar problem. When i try to start it, i have
to slam it into park to start it, now that doesnt
work at all, and i have to put it into neutral to
start it, also when i put it in park it will
start to back up with a loud clicking noise, so
now when i park, i put it into park and just put
on the parking brake. Whats going on!???!

sounds like you need to adjust the shift linkage. from what you describe as "loud clicking noise" the trans is not engaging into park like it should. get a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual for about 20 bucks and you should have all the instructions you will need to adjsut the linkage.

I recently bought a 1992 Dodge dakota 4x4 truck and i had to replace the fuel pump. I have also replaced the fuel filter, air filter dis cap, rotor, and spark plug wires. It ran well for a couple of days and now it wont start. Before this happened, it stalled a couple of times and now its not starting. I put fuel into the carb thinking it was a fuel problem but it just turned over and didnt even sound like it was going to start. Help
