Ok I'm studying on how to index the dist on my 92 v6. One site v8 performance.com shows the 0 to 5 volt point on a v6 to be at 147' past TDC and another site shows it to be at 14.7' past TDC.
This is a HUGE difference.
Anyone know which one is correct.
I would assume that the 14.7' would be correct. But hey I've been real wrong in the past.

You should see a V6 mark on the balencer. Just line that up to the 0 mark on timing cover. there just referring to how many degrees past TDC the mark is.. Mine has a V8 mark and a V6 mark on it. I think the 147 Degrees is correct cuz it is almost a half of turn past TDC on mine..

there is a v6 mark and a v8 on mine. the v6 mark is about half a round of the balencer small marks kinda hard to find need to clean the balencer real well ..

Just an update. I got it indexed. For further reference themproper mark to use on the 92 v6 is the second mark past TDC on the harmonic balancer.
Indexing the Dist will also allow you to find out if the engine has jumped time. If it isnt in time you will find out real fast, because indexing the dist by the timing marks puts the dist out of sink if it has jumord time. Mine has jumped time by 5'. To get it indexed I had to experiment and do it several times (10 or so. Each time I had to retard the timing by 1' at the 147' mark. When you get it right there is a huge difference in the quality of idle.(and drivability)
I know know that I have to put another timing chain and gears in it and redo the Indexing.
I will do this at a later date. I can't bring myself to tear the whol front of the engine off when I had to do it 2 times just a month ago with the head gasket ordeal.

Hey Trev , Just curious. I remember when you were trying to get your dist. on right. At some point before that was your truck broke down or just not running right. Before mine broke it purred like a kitten and started before the starter made a full revolution. My plugs are exactly the right color. Did your timing chain break or did you just replace it? I'm just wondering, it seems the same stuff happens to different trucks of the same year model at about the same mileage, give or take a couple of thousand. Try to bring me up to date on what and when you did it and in what order, if you don't mind and have time. Ok. when I got the truck it had blown the pass side head gasket.(about 120,000)I had the heads reworked and put them back on. Some time later about 150,000 I got tired of listening to the timing chain rattle and I replaced it.
The p/u had ran flawlwssly until a couple of months ago when the oil consumption was up. This is when I replaced the plenum gasket and the head gaskets again.
My real trouble started when I was at the junk yard and every v6 I saw had the wiring for the camshaft position sensor facing the firewall. Mine was up aginst the intake. So I got the bright idea to put it right.
Since then I have indexed the dist and have done the tps mod.
No real major engine work, I am currentlu looing for a rebuildable v6 that I can call my winter project, so next spring I can replace It. Should be exceeding 280,000 or 290,000 by then.
Hopes this helps.
You know WD stands for Water Displacement. It's rained here all day and I could have used it to displace the H20 here...HA

rotor aimed at or near #1

look straight down over rotor center rotor button
over cyl line dist pickup this is 0

looking from front line back edge of rotor button
with cyl line this will be aprox +3 this is where
the V6 runs best

Its called injector sync tells the injectors when
to pulse

doing it with the meter and turning you will be
off as much as 6 degrees either way + or - who
ever came up with this methood is nuts

Ill double check it this weekend.
I'm getting around 22 or 23 mpg right now.
It really helped to index the dist.
I did the TPS mod this weekend and it also helped.
I was going to relocte the air sensor from the intake to the air hat this weekend but I couldn't figutr out what size the plug needed to be.
Anyone know?
92Dak 3.9v6 4wd. 259,400+ miles

it's a 1/4" NPT pipe plug. i tried this but didn't notice enough difference to justify the loss in mileage so i put it back. i think every truck reacts differently.

that's what's nice about this, the TPS and the CPS mods, they are really easy to reverse.

Yep, totally agree with you daddio, if it doesnt work or I don't like how it runs I can put them back. I'll get the 1/4 NPT plug tomorrow and do the mod and see how they complement each other.
