Looking for some help. I have been told that you can put a 318 distributor in a 3.9 with a slant six reluctor and cap, has anyone done this.

Also has anyone run a Holley 390CFM 4 barrel with an adaptor plate on a 3.9? I want to get rid of the stupid computer, air pump and be able to adjust my own timing, other than that I love the truck.

Thanks

It sounds interesting Terry, are you a points plug condenser man? I was and finally gave in and have been figuring out how all the relays and sensors work, actually the whole wiring thing. After what I've seen even if you could get rid of the comp. it seems like it would be a nightmare to get it all tweaked. I'll have to think on it. I'm watching to see what everybody else has to say. Good Luck, TobyWD40

Terry, yes you can use a 318 dist. IF you change all the stuff to a 6, I don't know if you can use a slant 6 though. If the engine will run I wouldn't be to concerned about the dist. I have seen an Edelbrock 4 barrel intake on an 87 3.9 before. I was told that it ran great. I have no personal knowledge of that though. It was in a junk yard and I was thinking about buying it to replace my 88 3.9. After I got the engine out I decided it was too much trouble to remove the eng. then maybe a few years have to go through that all over again so I rebuilt my 88. I am glad I did, as it runs great.
Good Luck

Thanks for the info guys, After much council on another board I think I know which way I am going.

There are several outfits that sell a Billet Distributor that has all the electronics in a self contained unit much like the Chevy HEI setup, they run from 60-70 bucks, does away with the ignition box and ballast and all the wiring, just a hot wire and hook it to the coil, use the slant six reluctor and cap, That takes care of problem one.

Second I am going to run a Holley 390 CFM with an adaptor plate to run on the stock intake and I am going to burn E85 with hydrogen boost. I will let you know how it turns out, it is currently my #4 project so it might be a little while before I get er done.

you might want to make sure all of the rubber pieces in the fuel system are compatible with E85. i'm not sure if all the standard fuel line and rubber in the carb are.

I have been running about 40%-50% E-85 for a while now, it was getting such bad mileage I figured it was dumping gas because of the feedback Solenoid being bad, since going to the E85 it has been doing much better? haven't had any problems yet.

Regardless I will check it over though.

I have been running about 40% E-85 in all of my vehicles with no problems! From what I have read the only difference in running E-85 is on a Fuel injection model you need a computer to keep the injectors open a split second longer and on a Carburated vehicle you need bigger jets, other than that the 15% Gasoline is supposed to keep things lubricated enough that it shouldn't cause problems.

toby, E85 is ethanol, 85%. i have no idea what Hydrogen boost is.

i know back in the 80's a lot of vehicles were not built to operate with more than 10% ethanol blend. it was hard on rubber components as well as pistons.

E85 is a pipe dream. No, more like a pipe bomb. Watch your face (and wallet) the cost of living just exploded.

You get considerably less fuel economy using E85

2008 4.7L flex fuel dakota epa estimate
gas - 14/19
E85 - 9/12

It's darn near impossible to find a gas station that sells it. It's going to have to be darn near free to save you money at the pump.

Not to mention in the US Ethanol is made from corn. Now the price corn just went through the roof. Farmers now pay more to feed their livestock. Now you pay more for pork and beef. Now milk, cheese and other dairy products went up. Not to mention farmers can make more profile planting corn so they stop planting other products like wheat and soy beans. Now you pay more for bread, bagels, cereals and cooking oils.

PETA is now happy less animals are slaughtered but p#$ed off because now they have to pay $12 for a fake burger. It must suck to pay so much for something your kid eats for cheap in school.

ok, my tired rant is now over (I hate 3rd shift). Let the grilling begin!
