My Dakota is a 92 also, same setup you described. The ASD, A/C and fuel pump relays are the same. I swapped relays but that didn't help, I jumped the ASD relay (from the ASD power feed) and it started. This bypasses the ASD coil circuit which is activated (grounded) by the PCM. I was unsure about the relay and replaced it. My problem continued. When you bypass the ASD you supply power to the coil, the injectors and another PCM input (ASD B+).

Bypassing the ASD is an option but
A real easy test is to jump start using another vehicle and see what happens. Cheap and easy. I couldn't believe my battery could be the problem but its been working about 3-4 weeks. Before the battery, it would fail to start every couple days and eventually would not start at all.

Try the jump...nothing to lose. let me know what happens

Thanks Steve, I'll try it, but I sure hope whatever it's got is not catching. I'll have to use my wifes car to jump it with. If yall don't hear from me in a day or two call the cops because her car got sick and I'll be dead HA!, Toby

Hey Everybody, I got my Haynes Manual so I am almost thru readin the whole book. So far I havn't seen anything that helps me anywhere near as much as this site and the hands on from all on here. The pictures are nice but not as good as staring at the motor from all sides perplexed and deciding to figure it out. The wiring diagrams are helping to get a better understanding of the circuits. Have any of you ever wondered what goes on inside that computer, a wire goes in with a signal from a sensor or relay and it comes out in another wire or wires and tells other stuff how to react to that sensor or relay all in less than a blink of an eye- how does it do that, if you take it apart there would be noting but metal, plastic and other stuff, you just have to trust that it does or doesn't do what it's supposed to do. I'm still tracing wires, I ordered a Digital multimeter, some of the measurements are too small to pick up on the analog meter, I think Larry or someone on here said that was the case, I should have listened then. I will keep yall informed. Thanks Toby

Just think WD40 when you get it fixed you will know the truck and it's motor inside and out and how everything works. HA...
Keep us posted on how it is going. I still think your computer shot craps on you.
At least you can do the TPS mod and index the dist. with the new digital volt meter you have ordered.

Toby,

After that long note I wrote, I hate to admit but my truck is acting up again. It wouldn't start again, after 3-4 weeks of going great. Bypassing the ASD didn't do anything. After cranking the 10th time, it started. I went straight home and parked it. not sure what to do next, no codes set. I'm certain its electical.

Let me know what you find out and I'll do the same.

Hey Steve, Did you spray it with WD40, Just Teasing, at least I have company. You were in the right area, I am about to know the ins and outs of the electrical. I've almost decided the cheapest way to do it is to buy every sensor and relay new and start swapping them out one at a time and taking readings. Everything works as a team, if one is not right it creates a chain reaction. Does your check engine light come on? I am thinking mine is bad because I have never seen it on. It hit me the other day that my dad might have unhooked it if it bothered him, Ha! he was bad about that kind of stuff, probably figured it was a gimmick by dealers to make more money or something. Rainy in Mid TX. today so I guess I'll see if I can break these circuits down in my head. If signals going in and coming out of comp. I can't see how it could be bad. Everyone reading this I think there are hundreds, chime in with the thoughts, also if no check engine light what kind of reader does it take to get codes? If you clear it and condition remains does it continue to give same codes?

you should replace bulb for check engine light, then you can get the codes without a reader. Mine has not thrown any codes. I have replaced the CPS, hall effect sensor, checked gounds, battery, ASD and soldered all underhood splices.

Steve,Did you learn to do all that on here or how, just curious? It sounds like we're exactly the same place, except mine just quit as I was driving. It never made a funny noise or even sputtered it was like I turned off the key. It finally cleared up so maybe in the morning I can get back to it. I live in the middle of TX. so the weather here is just getting nice, not too hot. Where are you? I just got the Haynes manual and the three pages on chasis wiring for 3.9 MPI
seems close. I'll know tomorrow. Thanks TobyWD40

Since yours quit while running, you may have different problem than mine. I found a couple more wire splices that I resoldered, (green/orange), go to the fuel injectors, hopefully that solves my problem. The only problem is that I won't know unless it doesn't start again.

I get a lot of info from this site related to my dakota, people who own dakota's have the same/similar problems so they know best. I've worked on cars for 30 years but I'm not a mechanic. I learn from each problem. A new BIG problem always earns me a new tool that makes the next experience a little easier.

You checked the fuel pressure right?
Did you check the electrical feed off of the ignition switch?

THe hayes manual has a good wiring diagram you should study.

I'm in florida, the temp is just getting below 90, so its almost winter and I'm loving it.

Are you still working on your truck or did you give up and let the wife sell it?.....
We havnt heard if it is fixed yet.
I got me a digital volt meter today(bought with tip money I made today) and am planning to index the distributer and check the TPS to see if the mod is worth while.
Keep us posted....
Man my 401k took a beating...the dow is down over 350 points, I need a beer...

Hey Trev. My computer here was acting up so I missed everyone. I have been working on it. It is my main contact outside Ha! I'm so mean that the only ones that talk to me around here are the people in our church and it's their job,(to be good I mean), HA! I am about to get on the truck, My meter still hasn't got here, should have bought it at wally world. Did you find a red and white wire that was spliced around the PDC. I didn't see it when I was in there. That was the only place I didn't take off the insulation about 3-4" from the box on either side. I found 2 other splices there closer to the battery 3 DB wires and the other was 3 DG/Or wires. I see them in the chasis wiring diagram and Daddio brought it up, I guess I might as well look, he hasn't been wrong so far. I'm gonna be POed if that is the problem since the wire splices were the first thing I checked. Not Really, like you said I know a lot more about the truck now, and my wife likes the truck, it's me she was trying to sell now she's trying to give me away HA! The Market is a little touchy and I'm afraid it's going to get worse. Worlds a mess. I had an Idea, we can cut off 4 more cylinders and make it a 2 banger, cut off some wieght and it will look like those things they use in Veit Nam . Motor scooters I think their called HA! Let me know how the indexing goes and if I need to do the CPS mod. Thanks Toby
