Subject: When to replace O2 Sensors

Message:
My 2000 Dakota just hit 140,000 miles. All sensors are the original that came on the truck. Think its time to replace the O2 sensors?

are you getting a MIL? has your fuel mileage suddenly gone down?

if the answer is no to both, i'd say run them 'til they go out. of course, i'm sure others will disagree with me but, that's their right.

if you don't need new ones save the money for something else.

I ran about 140k miles on the factory o2 sensors on my old 95. I replaced the factory ones for my 02 at 80k miles.

they are recommended to be replaced at 80-100k miles.

daddio has the right idea if its not a safety issue or something thats gonna leave u stuck somewhere out in no mans land let em go till they fail usually o2 sensors will not strand u just turn on your light and make your milage drop but thats my opinion

I run them til they fail. They will either fail hard (and trip a check engine light) or get lazy (in which case your gas mileage will drop). If neither happens, it's a waste to replace them regardless of mileage. My car's O2 sensor went 190K before it failed hard. Got the same performance right up to the end. And the Bosch sensor that everyone trashes has given me the same gas mileage, power and emissions as the OEM. 88K miles and 5 years on that one so far.

I would check them out on a good scope see how they are switching or good digital meter can do this.

I'm confused, which doesn't take much at times.

I replaced all four sensors (NGT) 11,000 miles ago, factory ones lasted 106,000 miles. Since I replaced origanal ones it starting throwing codes on rear sensors, I bought a chilton man, to cross with the Haynes man. I already owned. Chilton say's all four are the same, but once you pull em, front ones have a few small holes and rear ones kinda look more like a screen.

Long story short, I ordered four more from a stealership, rear ones connected straight up, front ones I need to cut and splice connectors (I haven't done those again, since they where not throwing codes), which I had to do with all four last time.

You get OEM stuff you shouldn't have to cut and splice I would not think. I don't know what to think about this anymore. I know these d@mnn things aren't cheap. Kinda goes back to the ole sayin' IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT. But then you get to reading and you think d@mn, 100,000 miles, I better do that. So here I sit 8 freaking O2 sensors later, stilling wondering about the front ones. and only 11,000 miles and 5 months.

"Since I replaced origanal ones it starting throwing codes on rear sensors" - That can be an indication of failed catcon, if the rear sensors don't respond because they are getting the same reading as the front ones due to bad catalyst. The bad catalyst may be due to the original failure allowing the catcon to overheat.

I just figured out where they are on mine by readin in here, 92 3.9 turbo dakota 2wd auto. 169,000. So Bob if your O2 sensors go out it might mess up your catalalalaliac convertor-thing that looks like a funky muffler. How much does it cost and much do the 2 sensors cost on a 92? I'm in the process of changin sensors trying to get mine to run and I only like 12,000 more, it's nice to know the cost up front and if its Stealership only part, I like that. Thanks Toby WD40

pull your plugs and take a look at them. if they're black and sooty could be the O2's are on their way out. when the O2 went out on my soons '93 saturn his mileage went from about 38mpg to 25mpg almost overnite. changed the O2 and it immediately went back up to 38-40mpg.

if it's around 5+ mpg drop that's probably it. and better to catch it before it ruins the catcon.

Well replaced the rear ones last night, on the way home today it threw P0161 again., which would be right on because it takes two ignition cycles to throw that code.

I don't have a catcon, It fell off..Seemed to get a piece of straight pipe put in it's place. I'm at a lose here. Manuals aren't much help to troubleshoot em.

School lesson 101 your 02's in which you have 4 like most do (not all) the ones before your cat. converter control your air/fuel ratio among other sensors with your 02's and the other 2 02's after the cat monitor your cat.converter efficency how well its working and if you have a good scope or a good meter can tell if these are failing if say you have a fixed voltage or slow change in voltage in the ones before your cat. converter your other 2 after the cat. converter will mirror the voltage readings and may trip your MIL lamp after its out of specs with the PCM . And yes it takes 2 drive cycles to trip MIL lamp even if you changed all 4 02's you should of done a PCM reset by taking off your NEGATIVE BATTERY terminal and go turn your your key like your starting it and hold in crank position for 15 seconds sounds silly it resets all your sensors to new values reconnect cable fire up your truck take it for a joy ride for few bring it up to temp and past 50 mph at least 3 minutes so your 02's can can relearn Long term fuel table in your PCM and see if your fault your PCM then if its more than doing this 2 times and triping P0161 code I would say your heater internally on right bank is bad and might of got a bum sensor or your PCM isn't doing its job.I don't claim to be a teacher or a know it all this is what I was taught through my schooling years ago like JJ and others but admit some things have changed since I left the field in 02. hopefully this helps you out Problem child and everyone else with 02's now QUIZ time get your pencils LOL.......

I didn't beat on it at all to get it off, looked like someone cut it off and stole it. Yeah, stole it. That's my story and and I'm sticking to it.

Well, as for the O2's, I changed out the O2 relay and have gone 3 drive cycles without tripping the code. Maybe I found it, I still have my doubts.

I did reset the PCM after installing new sensors.

What you need is a digital volt meter
one stick pin
Radio shack jumper wires

Wire diagram

some have 1 sensor
some have 2 sensors
some have 4 sensors

All signals come up to the computer

take your stick pin tap each wire 1 at a time
if 1 jumper is not enough hook 2 togather and
tape run out under hood into window of truck

hook that wire to the positive side of volt meter
minus side to ground with another jumper wire

Now drive your truck while monitering the sensors
1 at a time

or buy a scanner

jumper wires with the aligater end 4 pack from
shack are around $3

I have seen them fail in 5 to 10,000 miles and
some last longer than the vehicle there in

should check each from cold start to operating
temp if 4 take the 4 days to check each you will
see exactly what is going on in converter land
rich lean conditions

many factors can take there toll on the sensor

On a stock or nearly stock truck they run so close
to the base fuel and timing maps a lazy sensor
does not always show up now in a modded out motor
it will show up quick in a big power loss

If your truck still idles smoth has good power
and mileage did not change don't worrie about it
also the best check is the color of the plugs
a light tan sandy color

o2 recomended replace 60 to 80,000 miles but not
always the case

look at it this way some tv's last longer than
others o2 sensors are no diff than any other
elect part some last long some don't
