Subject: Upcoming Alternator Purchase

Message:
Hello again to all,

I need to purchase an alternator for my 2000 Dodge Dakota 3.9L. What is the amperage rating for the stock alternator, and does anyone know of a place online that has good pricing on these alternators? So far in my short search of the web, the cost of this part ranges from $130-$200.

Thanks,

David

www.rockauto.com

a new NSA Denso 117amp for 167.79 w/o a core sounds good.

www.partstrain.com has an aftermarket for 117.95 but an 80 buck core charge.

autozone's got a 136 amp for 145 w/42 core charge.

or you could look for a local shop that rebuilds them and do better.

is your altenator dead?

No, but it's beginning to whine pretty loudly at this point, which is a bit concerning. I'd rather replace it now then to become a traffic helicopter story on the news when it breaks down.

Then the alernator is the Denso type?

If the alternator is whinning its probably the bearings and he is right it should either be replaced or have the bearings replaced. I have worked on alt's before and they aren't very hard to fix but I think you may be able to get a kit and replace the bearings, and brushes as well.
Just a suggestion.

Kit or no kit you can buy bearings and brushes. If it still charges, your diodes are still ok.They don't cost much but need to be soldered in. There are positive and negative diodes. If you need any, be sure you get the correct ones.check them with an OHM meter. Alternators are easy to fix. if it's your first time, pay attention how things come apart.

searay245se, I am from Columbus but I have lived in rogers arkansas since about 1979. One reason I left Ohio was because of the winters, its just too cold for me.

searay245se, the one thing I like about Arkansas is we have 4 seasons, and we get a little snow, not much, and some cold, just enough to remind me I'm still alive.
Take care.

Daddio we need to start a guide service, I 've seriously been lookin at it, but It's hard to do unless ya got at least two shallow water boats to take out 7-8 people at once. They stay booked up down in the Laguna Madre. It's some fun fishin. Toby

Hello again...

I'll ignore the talk of Ohio winters for obvious reasons :-) I simply refuse to think about it right now.

One last question on the alternator...What is the amperage rating for the stock Denso alternator in my truck? 117?

Regards,

David
