Is it normal to have some oil down in on the belly of the plenum plate? I guess that's what it's called. I was looking down into my throttle body and noticed towards the back closer to the firewall that there was a little oil pooled up in there. Maybe about 1-2mm depth and only the last back inch or so.

the truck doesn't burn oil and i check the oil maybe 2x a month and always the same level. My pvc clogs up all the time and gets gummy, wondering if it's from the oil on the plenum plate. Man, that's a big job. I'm pretty sure i could tackle it but i guess i'd better plan the whole day towards it. i don't even know if i need to replace the plenum gasket, it may be nothing. your advice please!!!

Hey nice 1 my 02' has a light film down on the plenum and my truck uses about 1/2 to 1 qt every 2,500 miles sometimes go whole 3,000 before I use any oil and my truck just over 74,000 and change oil every 3,000 and PCV valve every other oil change just for a peace of mind for myself .I would suggest leave it alone unless your getting pinging which is good indicator that its leaking but other things can cause pinging to don't let me steer you the wrong way for that only reason to change your plenum gasket.I've seen alot of them with the same issue and didn't fix unless I seen a significant amount of oil down there thats my thoughts to you whether you want to take Good Luck

yes some slight pinging at lower speeds in higher gears, nothing real major though. what would you consider a considerable amount of oil on the plenum. it is puddled a little bit in the back with the slope of the engine, wet looking around the whole gasket. what do you think?

nice1, If I read your question correctly you are looking down through the throttle body and seeing the oil. If that's the case I wouldn't worry too much about that I would just spray some carb cleaner to clean it out and run it. When the EGR valve opens it lets a little exhaust gas into the intake manifold and you can get a little build up because of that. That would be considered normal. That's if its not exsive. Since its not using any oil, I would consider it normal. I am sure someone will disagree with me, but that's just my ideas.
Good Luck

nice1, if it was the plenum gskt you'd be using some oil. maybe not a lot but some.

dakota49, '02's don't have EGR's. i think that '96 thur '04's didn't use them. i know my '00 doesn't have one.

that's correct, my 02 does not have an EGR valve. It also hasn't used one drop of oil since i bought it. the only oil i've ever put in is when i do oil changes. so if i don't have an EGR how is the oil getting in there? could residue come in through the PCV? that would be the only route for oil to come in other than bad plenum gasket.

I don't think i'm going to worry about it, i've had enough problems with this truck let alone thinking about something else being wrong.

Leaking valve guides, seals cracked cylinder heads bad piston rings etc... list could be endless.Only way verify a leak is a good dye that can be used on with oil to pinpoint your leak ,I know they have one for transmissons and for A/C unsure for oil? Or you can tear down your whole engine apart with your wallet and have each vital part X-rayed for cracks and holes very costly to you unless you got the loop to do it and the time.I would consider changing out your hose and new PCV valve and see what your finds are if your hose is very wet I would say you got some problems other than plenum gasket like I stated in the begining of this post
