Hello to the forum,

2000 Dakota 3.9L--126K miles...

I'm suddenly hearing a "growly" whine, if that makes sense coming from the engine. It's not the tranny, because it whines when parked as well. The pitch changes as I give it gas or let off. Could it be a possible failing alternator? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

might also be the belt tensioner pully mine was doin it when i got it aqnd replaced and its gone now just wiggle the pully and if it moves around u got it its 35 bucks at autozone hope this helps

could be any one of these: idler, tensioner, a/c comp, alt, power steering pump.

hes right could be anyone of em a trick to do is take a big screwdriver put the tip on each thing while putting your ear to the handle noise will be loudest when your on whats bad be careful though have heard of alot of stuff happening when playing that close to fans pullys and belt oh and i didnt mention the truck will be running while doin this
