lately i've been getting some groaning from my steering pump but it's only when i'm sitting still and give a little gas and hold it there and when i turn left and right i get the noise. it's not real loud but i think it's more than it should be. if anyone has read any of my other posts i had been having a lot of tightness in steering but no noticeable problems with the power steering pump but now i here this whining. now i'm wondering if it all is coming from the pump and my rack maybe is fine.

is this pump hard to change out? i know you need some kind of puller and also one to press it back on. i've been told you can rent the tools at advance or auto zone.

would appreciate anyone's input on this matter, thank you.

sport02, you would only need the puller to change out the pully, so if you get it off and get a rebuilt pump where you buy the pump should be able to change it out for you, or at least help you do the change over, but that's all you would need the puller for. I haven't changed the power steering pump before, or at least not on my Dak, but I did have to unbolt it when I pulled the engine, then bolt it back up when I put the engine back in. I don't remember having a tough time with it so it must not have been too hard or I would have remembered it.

mechanic said it's either air in the line or the pump is shot. i've been pricing the power steering pumps at various parts stores. looks like you can get with or without reservoir. i didn't know you could seperate the two. it doesn't look like two pieces when you look at the factory one installed on the truck.

anyways just the pump is cheaper but i think i'm gonna get the pump with the reservoir. i would think you have to change out fittings and o rings if you switch over the old reservoir and sounds like it could be a headache.

before i do any of that the mechanic said he'll put some kind of tool on that creates a vacuum and will displace any air in the lines if it is that.

sport02, putting vacuum on the power steering pump will pull out any traped air, the thing is, you shouldn't have to do that, it should be able to push the air out its self. (the pump) So I would think that's one more reason to think the pump is bad, but if hes not going to charge a lot to do it may as well try it.
On my Dak, its one piece not 2. It may be a good idea to get the whole thing as one unit though.

dakota49, what year do you have? apparently the reservoir and the pump are 2 pieces. i looked closer and there does seem to be a seperation between the pump and reservoir. you have to look real close between the pulley and the bracket for the pump and you can see it.

sport02, mine is an 88. a first gen. Mine is also the first year for the throttle body fuel injection. The port fuel injection is much better though.
Does yours have a plastic reservoir or metal? If you get just the pump, I think I would trust the metal more, I have worked with plastic on radiators, and such and it seems after a lot of miles if you try to reuse the plastic it distortes and won't seal properly.

i have a metal reservoir. I'd really like to do the rebuild myself because you sure save alot of money but now i'm not sure how i'm going to get the pulley off. the factory pump does not have threading into the shaft. therefore i don't know how you would get any pulley removal kits on there. it only has a hex fitting on it and i don't know how you would drive the pulley back on without anything to hold the tool onto the pump. anyone know about this?

nevermind, there are threads in the shaft, they're just further in than what you can see. how hard do you think it is to do the rebuild?

sport02, like I said I have never rebuilt a power steering pump before, so I'm not sure how much of a job it would be. I think I would check a salvage yard to see if they have any and how much they would want for one. I was thinking about mine being a 4X4 the steering is a little different so the pump may be a little different as well. I think the 2 wheel drives use a rack and pinion, and the 4X4's use the old style steering.
Just a suggestion.

i just got a remanufactured and done with it! Rented the pulley kit remover and it worked awesome. rented it from advance auto. it was a pain in the A$$ though getting the whole assembly off. And stupid Chrysler had to put that one pipe from the water pump right in front of the one bolt you have to get off to get the negative battery wire off, idiots!! proby did that on purpose!

So now i've got the new pump on, flush the entire system completely. steering feels great now but i still have groaning coming from the pump. I thought i bled it out thoroughly but apparently not. I don't know how else to bleed it any better. i'm wondering if the rack itself can cause strain on the pump and give me noise.

i guess im going to get that mechanic to put that vac tool on and draw a vac to get the air out. we'll see if that helps.
