Larry, you talk often about using your laptop while driving your dakota. I was wondering what program or interface you are using to do this with? Is it or would it be readily available for purchase for a person? I got a 92 dakota tat is backfiring losing power and running like s*%#. It's not giving any codes other than 12 and 62. It was giving a 31 but i replaced the canister purgre solenoid. New cap and rotor, head gaskets, plenum gasket, plugs, wires, fuel pump. It only does it every now and then. Engine will be running fine and will act like its flooding out, you can back out of it and let it idle ant then drive off. If it's floored it will run out to about 4 grand and will do it again.(fuel filter is new. Help!!!! IT'S GETTING EXPENSIVE.
Thanks

Update...I checked the timing and the fuel pressure. Both are where they should be. Fuel at 34 psi and 42 whith the vac. line unpluged. Timing is at 0 or so...I checked for vac line leaks and couldnt find anything. Several feet of vac line was used, if they looked bad I replaced them. Any way to check the coil? If it's bad will it kick a code?

Maybe You have a coolant temp sensor going out. I dont know if those have map sensors or not, but I would recommend getting a service manual and a multimeter and check them out you can probably get both for 30-40 bucks.

Check throttle position sensor also with an analog multimeter to see that the resistance sweeps smoothly. Check its harness to be sure that the contacts are good.

How many miles on the timing chain? Is it the original? They only last about 100K miles.

UPDATE.....Today I checked the pushrods, springs and rockes. All the pushrods are in good condition and are not bent. Used a piece of glass and rolled them on it, no wobbles. Springs all have the keepers and cant see any that are broken. Everything in the valve train is in good shape. I previously had checked the wiring harness and connections, used dielectric grease to get a good connection. Again all looks ok. The engine is in time. I do have a small coolant leak somewhere in the area of the thermostat area. I guess it is possible that I have damaged the coolant sensor, when I was cleaning the intake when the plenum gasket was changed. Will check for vaccum leaks tomorrow around the intake gaskets. Autozone lists the coolant sensors for less than $30 for both. Will get them ASAP and replace.
Timing chain was replaced around 25,000 ago, it made the 3.9 noise.
STILL PULLING MY HAIR OUT.
NOT MUCH LEFT.
STILL WELCOMING ALL SUGGESTIONS !!!!!
WILL TRY ANYTHING.

THANKS TREV1

Coolant temp sensor can cause backfiring. I had this happen on my old 95. I would get the MIL light to come on but when I did the key on key off trick, it would show nothing and the mil light would go off.

I took it to a shop I use and they found nothing wrong. On my way back home I noticed my temp gauge drop. I replaced the coolant temp sensor, backfiring stopped..for a few days. Turned out the one i installed went bad. I replaced it under the warranty. It was fine a few days and went bad.

I got them from autozone, wells brand as I recall. I bought another from advance and problem went away and coolant temp sensor was still in the truck when I traded it in.

If those Temp sensors do not fix , then replace
the Coil.
My 95 acted something like this - no codes
Hi voltage side shorting out , then come back
Blew muffler Wide open , was only a month old.
Replaced coil - like new again.

UPDATE AGAIN...
While reading the Haynes manual it talked about the Pulse Ring inside the dist. It came to me to check if the Dist was put back in time with the pulse ring in the proper position. I put the motor in time and checked the rotor to see if it was pointing at the #1 mark. It was. But the wiring for the Hall effect sensor was up aginst the intake housing. I pulled the dist and rotated the Dist 180. Then I rewired the spark plug wired to correspond to tne new position of the Dist. The Pulse Ring was not rotated 180. Make Sense?????. I drove the PU there was no cutting out and it ran good.

I guess it is as Mr. Lincoln says. "Return to the basics" If I quoted him right.

Ill replace the Coolant sending units tomorrow to be sure.

I'll drive the PU to work tomorrow (80 miles round trip) and see how it does. I hope this fixes it. Its been two weeks and the wife is probally tired of not having her car to drive.

IM STILL OPEN TO ALL SGGESTIONS KEEP THEM COMMING AND THANKS.

Excellent work trev. I understand about your wife. When I had my old 95 there toward the end of when I owned it, i was working on it alot. It was just minor things, coolant temp sensor a few times, bad ground wire at pcm, tune up, quest to improve milage, etc.

She complained loud enough about me "wasting" time and maybe I should get a new truck.

UPDATE.

Drove truck to work and it ran great. There was no indication of any misfire or stumbling. Problem solved.

Just goes to show that even when you think you know what you are doing, and have done it before. You can still make an mistake that takes time to figure out.
