I have 2002 Dakota 4x4 with a 3.9 it is also an Automatic. for the Past week the truck starts back firing after it has been running for about two minutes. I have to stop an turn off the truck for a minute and it seems to go away. this problem has happened before but not on a regular Basis. I have changed the plug, wires and cap, battery, I have not replaced the o2 sensors it just has passed inspection. it almost seems like a rev Limit because there are Multiple back fires at once and the trucks gose almost not where, any help would be greatly Appreciated

Could it be bad coolant temp sensor? I had a similar problem with my old 95 with 3.9L. It would backfire sometimes and run badly.

I only caught it cause I saw the temp gauge inside the truck fluctuate.

Benrg33, try running the codes to see if there's something wrong there, then go from there. To me it sounds like it COULD be a lean fire condition. Meaning its not getting enough fuel at the time it back fries. If it happens when it hot, it COULD be a hot piece of carbon causing it to fire before the plug, and causing it to back fire. These are just guesses though.
Good Luck,

Thank you both for your quick responses, I have timed the problem and it takes about 3 minutes for the problem to happen, once the truck gets to Operating temp it goes away , so it could be a coolant temp senor, are there two sensors i saw in the manual there is a temp sensor and temp sending unit are they the same? also if I stay below 2500 rpm that also helps and it does not backfire this is the strangest problem. I did get one code once when the truck was going total ape Sheet, p0301 miss fire in Cylinder 1, this is my second dakota I had a 94 3.9 drove in for 8 years it was a work horse never had a problem once This is just so disappointing. thanks again for of your guys help.

Check spark plug wires. I replace them every 30K miles. Check their routing as well as their condition.

definitely could be the coolant temp sensor. there are 2. the coolant temp sensor is the one that sends data to the PCM. the temp sending unit is for the gage only.

The Problem is now resolved unfortunately it was more then a sensor, I took it to the dealer and they had to replace the intake valley gasket. The truck runs great afterwards. I guess the leak gotten bigger over the years. They also stated that the problem did not happen at start up because it ran on the choke any problem seemed to be resolved this problem has been going for 3 years glad it is over with. I still want thank everyone for their advice
