I have been visiting several junk yarks in Washington State, looking for parts to put rebuild the engine and tranny for a friend of mine. Low and behold I came across a 93 dakota that been totaled due collision with a dear. This truck has a lot of performance goodies. I found out through a friend of the truck owner that the truck had a custom built stroker put in the truck with JBA ceramic coated headers, F and B throttle body MSD igniton. The junkyard had the truck sitting there in the yard, I offered them a 1000.00 dollars for the truck, they hadn't fully checked it out. The truck was damaged pretty bad due to a the collision and roll over. The junk was glad to take my offer. The engine and tranny only has about 20,000 miles on it. I figure I got the steal of a life time. My grandpa gave a 92 dodge dakota for free, it has loud knock in the engine. I have access to my uncle's shop, he knows alot about Mopar and he knows alot about Dodge trucks mainly Rams. He will help in his spare time when I'm out of college. I should have a scream'in dakota when all is said and done. I figure by time I get done with the transplanted drive train into my grandpa truck I should have less than 3000 dollars into it. I will keep you posted.

Finally got the tranny problem solved by installing a rebuild kit with upgraded clutches. Had the truck dyno'ed recently, it putting out 247rwhp. I guess this is good for a stoker v6, not sure what components were used in the engine so far it running good.

Update on the truck:

18 mpg city and 23mpg freeway, the way the transmission is set, accelerating at half throttle will cause the truck to chirp the tires when shifting to 2nd gear. If I floor it the tires will lay down quite a long double strip of rubber and it will chirp during shifting in second and into 3rd gear. Man do I love the way this truck runs.

I just bought a 1988 dodge dakota 3.9 4x4 longbed for 500 dollars. The paint looks like crap but i thought i got a good deal. It has been parked and not ran since 2006. I put a new battery in the truck it fired right up and i drove it around the neighborhood before i bought it and it ran great. I drove it home about ten miles and when i got to the 8 mile mark it lost oil pressure and started knocking. I towed it two miles home. The oil pressure goes to 50psi or no pressure at all. Sometimes when you start it no pressure at all. Sometimes it runs for 5 mins and runs 50 psi and drops to zero and starts knocking from the right valve cover. There is no bearing knock that i can hear just knocking from the right valve cover. It has even went from having oil pressure to not having oil pressure and back to having oil pressure all in a minutes time of running. Any ideas i am about to take the valve cover off now and see if anything is loose. Any idea on how the oil pump is driven on these trucks? I know chevorelts are driven off the distributor. I dont know anything about dodges

Todd, the oil pump and dist. are driven off the cam. Just like a Chevy. The 88 you have has a rocker shaft to hold the rockers, it sounds to me like you may had a bad lifter, or rocker, should be an easy fix for the noise, as for the low oil pressure, that may take a bit more work to track down. It could be just about anything from a bad "Pressure relief valve" to bad bearings, but if it was bad bearings, I would think it would do it all the time. I did have a Dodge that lost oil pressure and I changed the oil and filter and it was fine after that. Maybe you could just change the oil filter and see what that does.
Good Luck
