Subject: Dual CATS-Change to One??
IP: Logged

Message:
My 2002, 3.9L, Auto came with dual CATS, meaning I have to buy 4 O2 sensors. Can I change to single CAT, I'm not in CA? Has anyone done this? Sure hate to have to buy 4 sensors.
Thanks,
Steve

They would not all go bad.
Two in front are most important.
Rear ones only check on the cats.
To go to only two -you would have to get a 'Y' pipe. But you might also have to get another computer.

it would be possible if you can figure out how to fool the pcm into thinking you still have 4 O2's.

Get 2 O2 simulators from Ebay for the rear O2 sensors. Gut the cat converters & stick them back on. Your truck will still pass a safety inspection because they will visually see the cats, it will also pass a smog test because the rear sensors will read clean and not trigger any error codes. I am running my daily driver s-10 like this and it works for it.

Before the ass-ripping about felony charges and stuff begins...

For those who know more than I do...would running a single cat setup work if he just put the 2 upstream sensors one right after the other and then did the same thing with the downstream sensors?

Also, while the upstream sensors are more important, aren't the downstream sensors the ones that are more likely to become "lazy" or just go bad altogether?

An easy way around the downstream o2 sensor is to go get some spark plug non faulers from your local part store. Screw the faulers into the bung for the o2 sensor and then screw the o2 sensor in the fauler. What this will do is let a little exhaust in to the sensor and fool it into thining every thing is ok. That way you can gut you cat and you wont throw a code. It works because your removing the o2 sen. from all the extra exhaust stream and only allowing just enough exhaust into it to make it think its doing its job. You probably cold put the front sensors back to back, however I think they are ment to be placed on each bank so they can sample what each side of the engine is doing. Placing the front o2s back to back would not give a true reading but I think it would work.

Thanks for all the replies. After reading all of them, I've decided to just stick with what I have. I didn't realize all the Dak's, later models?, came with two CATS. Thanks again for helping me decide.

You never said why you have to buy 4 new sensors. What makes you think they're bad? They may still be covered under warranty.

I'm just looking down the road a bit when I have to put on a new exhaust system. Also have read that O2 sensors SHOULD be replaced at 60,000 miles. I'm at 55,000 now on my 2002.
Thanks again,
Steve

if i am not mistaken, O2's are covered under the federal emmissions warranty which is 8yr/80k.

Daddio,
Your right, they are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles. I should have checked before posting and since I only drive this truck 4 months out of the year, I'll hit the 8 year mark before the mileage. Thanks again for all the input.
Steve

Catcon is 8/80, but other components are less. Some are 5/50. But you do not have to replace O2 sensors every 60K miles. All depends on your usage and whether something goes wrong to take them out (failed catcon, head gasket blows and steams the sensor). My original O2 sensor in my car lasted 190K miles. And lest you think it got "lazy" as some people here suggest, it was measuring the same level of pollution as new, and the same gas mileage the whole life of the car. If it were 'lazy', there would have been a measurable change. If there is no change, the sensor does NOT need to be replaced.

Bob,
It seems I may not be that bad off....I just bought this truck and MPG is running around 17-18. Not bad from some of the other posts I have read here. I'll just hold off doing anything for awhile and see how it all works out. Thanks,
Steve
