i HAVE A 92 DAKOTA WITH THE 3.9. WHEN IT IS COLD OR EVEN COLLOER LIKE 50'S AND BELOW IT HAS TROUBLE STARTING. I CAN GO OUT TRY TO START IT AND IT CRANKS AND CRANKS. THEN I JUST TURN ON THE IGNITION AND I CAN HEAR A CLICKING OR CHATTERING COMING FROM THE RELAY BOX ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FENDER. I PULLED ALL THE RELAYS AND IT STILL CHATTERS. LIKE IT IS COMING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX. ANFTER IT GETS DONE CHATTERING(COULD BE 30 SECONDS OR 2 MINUTES) IT STARTS RIGHT UP? IT IS PRETTY AGRAVATING IN THE WINTER TRYING TO GET TO WORK ON TIME.ANY IDEAS?

Find out which relay is doing it and replace it. If that doesn't work then you have intermitent power to that relay and the problem is in the wiring and not the relay. The other possibility is that you have a bad ground. That is also the easiest to check. To repair any of those things you need a good wiring diagram or at least an understanding of relays.

I have pulled all the relays, while the chattering is happening and swapped them around so I'd say maybe it is a ground in the bottom of the relay box (not good) thats what i'll check next. maybe spray come contact cleaner in there.thanks

Just run a wire from the negative terminal of the battery to a nearby ground source and see if that takes care of the problem.

eric, there is a splice just below the box that holds the relay's a lot of people have had problems with the splice, there are 3 wires that come together and they get corroded and can cause all kinds of problems. What you can do is remove the tape and see if they are clean, or corroded. If they are corroded, clean and resplice and that should help.
Good Luck,
