I have a 2001 3.9 w/ 116,000 miles, Automatic. When driving i hear a ticking noise from the motoor. It sounds almost like a valves or lifter problem, but it gets bad right before it shifts, which makes me think it may be a tranny. It almost sounds like my truck is a deseil for a min. Anyone have similair problems? Any help would be great. Thanks

It could be the timing chain. I had the same sound and thought it was the samething. I just replaced the timing chain and the ticking is gone. I'm not saying that is your problem but it could be.

sounds like ping. try a higher grade of fuel and see if it lessens or goes away completely. if that's it there are a few things you can do. post back.

We put some injector cleaner in and some high grade fuel trying to get that all cleaned out and the noise is the same. We took it to the shop to get an opinion. I'll let you know what they say.

If it gets louder as you get higher in the RPM range then generally it is something in the bottom end. Which, is not good at all.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
