The first number in a tire size is the width in MM's. The second number is the percentage of the width that is the height. The R means it's a radial tire. The 16 is the rim size it fits.
That said, a 265 is 10mm wider than a 255.
Lets see I hope I remember this right.....
265mm (is 10.4 inches wide)/ 70% (185.5 x2=371)(371mm=14.55in.)/ 16 (16 +14.55)=30.55in. tall

With the bigger tire when your speedo read 60 MPH your actually going 63.2

i apreciate both of your answers.. thats what i was thinking that the 265 was wider but a bunch of other guys on here said that the 255/70/16 was a wider tire??? i thought that the 65 or 70 or whatever numer meant a certain percentage of the width was the heigth. just makin sure i wasn't losing my mind.

No, the first # is the width, as the others have already explained. The second # is the aspect ratio - the relationship between width and height - not the width itself as Curly claims.

Let's take a look at the most common designation, the metric system for tires. This is the one that reads 120/80V-16. This type of designation is the most commonly used nowadays, and would break down as follows:
120 is the nominal width of the tire, in millimeters.
80 is the aspect ratio, expressed as a percentage of the width.
V is the speed rating for the tire.
16 is the diameter of the wheel that the tire is constructed for.

80 is the aspect ratio, "expressed as a percentage of the width"

put a 40 series and a 70's series tire side by side and tell me which is wider!

Whether a 40 series or 70 series is wider will depend on the width of the tire itself - not just the profile. The aspect ratio just gives us the profile, you need the first # for the width.

The first number is NOT the width of the tire. It is the height of the sidewall. Hence a 255/75-15 is taller than a 205/75-15. Same aspect ratio, but the 255 WILL be wider, because it is taller. 70% of 255 is more than 70% of 205.

If it was the width, then the 255 would only be wider, not taller.

Tire widths vary between tire models. Some 70 series tires are wider than 60 series. It depends on the overall size (diameter) of the tire.

When the present system came into effect, they said then it was the sidewall height, and the tread width depended on the aspect ratio. Now I see they have changed that.

Here is what the first number designates-and it's not the TREAD width:

The 225 indicates this tire is 225 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel. This measurement is also referred to as the tire's section width. Because many people think of measurements in inches, the 225mm can be converted to inches by dividing the section width in millimeters by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).

Widest point of the SIDEWALL on a SPECIFIC width wheel.

The sidewall width can be 255 while the TREAD WIDTH can vary from tire to tire. You could have a 255/60-15 with a tread width of one inch.

Leave it to our government to screw things up by changing a perfectly good system that worked.

That's the way it has always been since the start of metric designation for tires. The government didn't change it. The first # has always been the width - take it from someone who has been around since most tires had letter designated widths. Your right about how it is measured (the section, not the tread) but you can't have a 255/60-15 with a tread width of one inch. That's just ridiculous !

just set a 235/75R15 next to a 235/70R15 and the 70 will be a little shorter, but also about 1/2 to 3/4 wider than the 75, trust me, i worked in a tire shop for about 3 years. I believe that i would have some idea on this subject.
